Well, can we all remember Einstein's law "Mater and energy can neither be created or destroyed. They can only be changed from one form to another.". Them rocks have to go somewhere. However one lesson here. If you smack the asteroid hard enough you scatter the debris over a wide enough volume that the much smaller rocks no longer pose a very large danger.
