NASA's Perseverance Mars rover landing: Why do we keep going back to the Red Planet?

Why keep going to Mars is a valid and germane question. I suspect that going to Mars is a testing ground for the technology of more extensive space travel. It's the closest planet that's not overtly hostile to space craft probs. The Mars data obtained would help humans determine what extraterrestrial bodies NOT to settle, (Mars being one). Finally, the global space efforts provide extensive employment and professional opportunities for scientists and universities as well as marked income for corporations. (Yes! Of course, nationalistic politics is involved, but that's an Evolutionary H. Sapiens thing).
