Ever hear of/see Civil War re-enactments where half the people are dressed and act out the Confederate forces role? Every year there are several around here, especially at Greenfield Village. Similar groups do the same for WW-II and its preceding events, and yes that means some people take on German Army or Waffen SS roles. Doesn't make them NAZI sympathizers any more than the Civil War guys want slaves. More nonsense from the opposition research guys.

I don't know what is in his heart. I'd have to look into this group more... however, on the surface I'd suggest a group dedicated to re-enacting the exploits of a particular Nazi division might have some characteristics beyond just being a collection of interested history buffs. I think it would certainly be worth taking a closer look, don't you agree?

Would your opinion be any different if there was a D instead of an R attached to his name? How about if it was Obama and an NVA/Iraqi army re-enactment group?

Regardless, my original point stands that I don't think it's a very conducive to a successful political career to be photographed smiling in a Nazi uniform under any circumstances.

So, this pretty funny. Another nugget from the upcoming elections...

I'm not sure what to make of it all - but I would suggest it's probably not the best thing for your political career unless you plan on running in 1930's Germany.

You know, when you're playing Cowboys and Indians, someone's got to play the Cowboys... or Indians. Whatever..

(I always liked playing the Indians myself.)

KS-15 used to say that a lot.

No, I don't agree.

On his site (linked to in the article) there are pix of him & his son in WWII American Paratrooper garb, WWI American Infantry uniforms (they're even in a trench!!!) & Civil War Union uniforms. His sleazebag opponent is simply using these reenactment pix for typical sleazy political advantage. I hope it blows back in his face.

Some people have fun doing re-enactments, you pretty much gotta be douche bag to try and use that against them for political gain. I guess I have no chance at politics because I played as the Germans in a video game as well.

When he starts handing out pamphlets on how the Jews run the world lemmy know; Cantor and Kaptur can just go bawk like fat hens till then.

Reenactments are important for remembering history. And accurately remembering history requires both sides. As long as you're not changing the outcome (ie. the Nazi's win, for example) - to me it seems like any other debate. Taking the less popular side to foster exchange. There's also a certain honor in giving the good guys someone to beat up on.

I was on a paintball team where we used to play with SEALs, ATF, and FBI-HRT. We were the bad guys, we took hostages, and we shot soldiers and cops trying to rescue them. And when the real bullets start flying, they'll be better (and less likely to bleed) for it. Does that make me a terrorist?

Wouldn't change my mind one little bit what party the candidate belonged to, or what war was being portrayed, as long as the activity was part of a historical reenactment group, which by all accounts this was.

Making a fuss over this smells of desperation, and the incumbent in this race (Rep. Marcy Kaptur) is on Charlie Cook's "watch list" of endangered Dems. That list was 70 candidates long, but was recently expanded to 90.

You know, there's a pretty big stigma around that whole Nazi thing, in case nobody noticed. It's SUCH a stigma that in Germany, you can go to prison for anything that remotely resembles denying the Holocaust or identifying oneself with the Nazi Party.

So here we have this rocket scientist who (unfortunately) happens to be a Republican Candidate running for office. Now I have to ask y'all. Exactly how did it never occur to him that someone might have issues with him donning a Waffen SS uniform and playing Jew Killer in some Nazi re-enactment that allegedly was a father-son bonding opportunity?

Come ON. And this dude is running for Office under a Party already accused of being closet Nazi's and Fascists by the Looney Left. You know, if I'M the RNC Honcho, dudes like this are gonna be thrown under the bus before their crap can see the light of day and certainly be eliminated before the damn Democrats can make political hay of this.

Doc, God knows (wait. I'm an Atheist) I love ya, but this goes way beyond what might be considered at the level of the hundreds of Civil War re-enactments that happen every year in America. I'm not even passing moral; judgment here. All I'm pointing out is that the Republicans MIGHT want to find and support candidates who more closely identify with the majority of reasonable,Moderate Americans. I don't think SS role-players identify Moderate America.

Republican Feet must look like Swiss Cheese. Defeat from the Jaws of Victory..................

If Rich Iott is just a re-enactor, then technically this is no big deal --- just really really bad "optics."

It definitely doesn't help your political campaign to have pictures of you dressed up as a Nazi, even if you have a good explanation, but it doesn't mean he is actually a Nazi sympathizer. It seems like the group he belongs to disavows any Nazi sympathies. I'd suggest if he wants to have a smoother ride in future campaigns, he get out of the Panzer unit and switch to a unit of American GIs and get some pictures of himself planting a flag on Iwo Jima.

(Too bad he isn't really wealthy and made a totally stupid gaffe, because it would be fun to distort Rich Iott into Rich Idiott. Dang!)

Well, the RNC didn't get on it as fast as you would have, but they are beginning the process throwing Iott under the bus. He was one of those the RNC had listed on their website as one of their up and coming "Young Guns," but now they have pulled him off the list.

Especially since 90+% of those War Between the States guys that fought for Southern Independence didn't own slaves in the first place.

And while Waffen SS guys were ardent Nazis, and while the regular German Army guys took a personal oath to Hitler, the regular guys were fighting for the Fatherland, not for Nazism per se.

Nothing Uncle Fester ever wears (whether fishnet hose, women's panties, whips and chains) could ever denigrate our collective vision of the beauty and sex appeal of Morticia.

(And I consider Adrenalynn's avatar bordering on pornography.) But ain't it just edible?

Sorry - I can't take credit for the avatar. It's Kristanna Loken, from a promo poster for Terminator 3 : Rise of the Machines

I'm aware of that (because you told us), but it's your avatar, and so now it's "you". Sort of...

Tell ya what. I'll change my avatar to a blond dude with blue eyes, a reasonably healthy build for my age, with a kind of gleam in those eyes that says, "I want to go canoeing in Montana and have a large harem" kind of look.

One of the residents of the Senior Apartments here is from Germany. She very proudly displays a picture of her Father in uniform taken during his service with The Africa Corps. Should I call CNN & tell them she's got a picture of an Evil Nazi Soldier in her home? Or should she be allowed to honor her Father in this way, a way that she sees as appropriate?
Many rank & file Germans served honorably in service to their country. This is what Iott is reenacting. This is what CNN & his sleazy opponent are exploiting.

And what are we to do with all the left-wing actors & comedians who have portrayed NAZI/Confederate/whatever roles over the years? Guess they don't get to tell us how to vote or what causes to support anymore either

There was an interview last night with Rick Iott regarding his SS reenactments. He was asked a few direct questions, but he danced around them all. He had called men of the 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking, “valiant”, but when questioned about that he waffled all over the place. The impression I got was that Iott portrayed members of that group because he actually admired them.

Please don't, unless you want to score points with CrazyEddie.
