I need some help with a astronomy problem that i'm doing. the question is
if the earth was the size of a B-B (0.2centimeters) how big would the sun be? How big would the milky way be?
This is what i have so far Sun) 7x10^5= 7x10x10x10x10x10= 700,000 radius

Earth) 6.4x10^3= 6.4x10x10x10= 6,400 radius
Sun is 109.375 times larger than earth
so for the actual question i have the 109.375x0.2= 21.875 cm The Sun would be 21.875cm and i have no clue for the milky way galaxy.

any help or advice where i could find help would be great. thanks ahead of time

This does not belong in missions and launches, and will probably be moved to SPace Science and Astronomy or Ask the Astronomer.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. OK, now that it's in the right place, your sun diameter is correct. The reference I used (2002 RASC Handbook) had the sun's diameter as 109.12 times the earths, but that's close enough, so your calculation is correct.

What did you use as a reference for the earth and sun's diameter? Your teacher might want to see how you arrived at the figures.

Have you tried to look up the diameter of the Milky Way?
Did you get any answers? I don't have any handy, so I'll see what I can find. Let me know what you come up with.
I assume the purpose of the assignment is to teach you how to research information, so I'd be happy to help point you in the right direction, and confirm that you've got things right. But it wouldn't do you much good if we did all the work for you, would it?

Wayne

But the Krell forgot one thing John. You like moving posts don't you....

________________________________________

your move...

You don't get it.
I can't move posts.
I have no power.
My posts have the same power as yours.

The fact is, this post did not belong in Missions and Launches. The whole point of having all the different fora is so that someone can look at what interests them, instead of having to wade through a lot of unrelated stuff.

In this case, the moderator agreed with me.
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't
That's life.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. My bad about this post being in the wrong spot. The reference was in the book that I’m using. I have looked up the diameter of the milky way and its 50,000 ly which I think converts to 473026400000000000 km or 4.730264e+22cm

Thanks for your help so far.
so if i just had the radius then I could multiply that by .2(earth) then right

No problem with picking the wrong spot. Easy mistake to make. Welcome to SDC, if you hang around, you'll learn a lot, including what each forum is for. And in Missions and Launches, Space Science and Astronomy, and Ask the Astronomer, you can learn more here, if you watch for a while, than you can imagine.

Especially in Missions and Launches. We have posters here from inside the space program, and from every viewpoint concerning the future of our exploration of space, and folks who update us on all of the missions in progress. I doubt there is a better place to learn such things.

Just curious, what book are you using? What grade level are you? Just trying to understand what the instructor might be expecting. Perhaps we can point you in a direction to exceed their expectations!

By the way, this online conversion is a good site for converting things, one I use all the time.

MW

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Yeah, but be careful. That's a lot of 10^#s to multiply.
I'm working on it now, but will double and triple check things to make sure I didn't lose a factor of 10, or a thousand, or a million

But the Krell forgot one thing John. That would be great if you guys would be able to help me out on questions, that’s what I was hoping to find. This is my first astronomy class so it’s all new to me. The book I am using is Explorations an introduction to astronomy fourth edition by Thomas T. Arny. This is my sophomore year of college at Onondaga Community College.

I won't help you do it (personal philosophy) but will let you know if you've got it right

What was the year that text was published? I'm kind of a science historian, so would be interested in knowing what is current at a college level.
Meanwhile, I'll visit my library to see if it's there.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. i think that i found some info that will help me find the radius of the milky way.... the radius of the milky way is 10^8 times the radius of the solar system...the solar system is 8600 times the radius of the sun... and the sun is 100 times the radius of the earth... ok i have this info how can i figure out the radius of the milky way??

It made sense, but I haven't had time to check and see if your numbers are correct.
It is clear you know how to do the calculations, go for it.
Then recheck your sources and calculations!

But the Krell forgot one thing John. 6400 (Earth) x100(sun) x 8600 (solar system) x10^8(Milky Way) = 5.504x10^17x.2 (earth)/6400(earth) = 1.72x10^13 Used a conversion table to convert to kilometers= 172,000,000 km

Right??

Milky Way 172,000,000 kilometer

That's if the earth is the size of a BB?

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters.
