In the Free Space, Star Trek vs. Star Wars thread someone asked for ideas for a new space TV show.

Here's my idea, what are some of yours?

I've always thought it would be interesting to have a space show that deals with just our own solar system, maybe 50 to 150 years from now. Access to space is still fairly exclusive, but some commercial space, tourism, and resource mining are taking place. The story would follow some pioneers, who are exploring NEOs, Mars, and perhaps Jupiters moons. A lot of the story involves real science, why these places are interesting, what they can do for us, and how they play a role in our future. Episodes have our characters find different resources on NEOs, set up big deals with processing companies, relax at Moon base, visit Earth and see the improvements (solar power sats, better tech, clean sources of energy). I think that if this is done as well as BSG, with a focus on the human elements and the setting being secondary that it could work. Thoughts?

--

Nuke um till they glow, then shoot them in the dark!

"Time exists so that everything doesn't happen at once" Albert Einstein

Sounds like a good idea to me. The challenge is to develop really compelling characters and story lines. Are you working on this idea?

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen...and those who do not know what happened.

Nothing serious. Just something that I've been kicking around for a while.

I see the main character as a snotty rich kid with a flair for technology, money to buy a spaceship, and the desire to break away from daddy (mommy?). He (she?) starts out quite rude, annoying, and generally a pain in the @ss and develops into someone with character (due to the hardships of space, etc.)

Thats about as far as I get, then something else comes along.

"Time exists so that everything doesn't happen at once" Albert Einstein

Since it's fairly near future and you want to have real science you're going to need a ensemble cast. I say this because there's going to be a fair amount of time where group I is just going from place A to place B and that'll be pretty boring if shown continually. Group II better fill in while the other people get to where they're going. Weaving all the story lines together and splitting them apart, where we don't always have the same characters on the tube week after week, would be both interesting (IMO) and quite a challenge. I wonder if the average viewer would accept not seeing his/her favorite character each week though ?

-----------------------------------------------------

Ask not what your Forum Software can do do on you,

Ask it to, please for the love of all that's Holy, STOP !

Interesting point. What I had in mind originally was a kind of "Star Trek" approach, with each episode representing some significant event for the main crew. I kinda like your idea however, I'll have to give this more thought.
"Time exists so that everything doesn't happen at once" Albert Einstein

How about The Pilot having it start out as a series of historical events leading to the establishment of the first colony on the moon. A young pilot for the establishment of a civilian space hotel run by xyz hotels. Boy meet girls with a space plot twist.
Bigelow has already started this with their inflatable structure that can be linked together with many others to transform into the first space station the then a return to the moon a to be followed by the first maned lunar habitat. The slowly transforms into a mining colony them manufacture and various catastrophes that threaten to stop it but it continues to survive. Think of babylon 5 in earth orbit, on asteroids and on the moon

The young space pilot becomes the colonies first governor.
Various characters become citizens of space and lunar colonies interweave around a central plot them, development of a viable space civilization. You have good guys bad guys and natural disasters such a major solar flares and rocket ship failing, habitats developing a leak and help is far away.
