Northern lights (aurora borealis): What they are and how to see them

About 30 some odd years ago, I remember the month as February, at night after a very long day, I observed pale pink "curtains" in the sky. I only watched briefly and concluded it was some kind of reflection. The next day there was a news article about an aurora. That was at 41.59N, -73.91E, pretty far south indeed. I always regretted not watching longer. Those lights have never returned.
