I don't like the 3 DU option because loss of one screen doesn't leave much. And they do fail, usually at the worst time and without warning. I like the 6 DU option; lose one screen and you can just move evrything over to another one.

Will this layout have the ability to pull up real-time system schematics on some of the multifunction displays?

I don't see why not. It's a matter if they want to spend the beans for the heavy duty diagnostics.

I don't care which one they actually choose. I just find it impressive that they are buying off-the-shelf instead of custom building. Even if the components have to go through environmental testing, they'll still be able to cut out whole design steps, and hence reduce costs. This is good thinking on someone's part in the Exploration Systems Directorate.
Brian J. I don't think they are buying off-the-shelf exactly. There probably aren't any off-the-shelf glass cockpit electronics that will operate in a hard vacuum (required for CEV EVA ops) over the temperature ranges and radiation environment that will be encountered.

This kind of thing doesn't surprise me, it kind of reminds me of the MEDS Shuttle upgrade about 10 years back.

The MEDS upgrade replaced the three monochrome CRTs and various analog flight instruments with nine color mulit-function displays.

The official unofficial rumor is that there was nothing wrong with the old system, but the Shuttle astronauts were tired of getting picked on by airline pilots who said that their cockpits looked more futuristic than the Shuttle.

So, again we are defeated. The can only log 8 minutes of multi-engine time, 15 minutes of IFR, 2 weeks of glider time, and since they land within 50 miles of their take-off point, it's not even considered a "cross-country" Who'd ever want to take that job.

This might be a case of a revolving door.

A lot of stuff, including materials, we got from the space program. Since then more material and electronic research have been done (generally speaking) and now NASA is looking at 'off the shelf' stuff.

What do the very high flying planes use? Like U2 and other civilian extremely high flying aircraft. And the military? I'm sure stuff they use has to be resistant to radiation from nuclear fallout. So maybe the off the shelf stuff is not that far off. And maybe NASA is looking for a contractor that can provide a modified version of their off the shelf product.

Its kind of impressive when you think about how far tech has gone, even in the market.

"SCE to AUX" - John Aaron, curiosity pays off
