For those New Zealanders who have a Sky TV dish, you might be interested to know that one of the test patterns in the TVNZ MUX on B1 (Sky TV satellite) has been replaced with a NASA TV feed.

I will attempt to find out if this is likely to be a long term situation however, should it be, it will never be easier for Kiwi's to tune in to NASA around the country. You will need a digital satellite receiver, but that's relatively easy to organise compared to setting up a new dish system trained on I701.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Maybe the Hoaglandites will psychically retransmit the launch for the clairvoyant.

Oh, I guess the clairvoyant would already know success or failure of launch.

Another great idea done in by reality.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Hey matt, did you manage to get NASA TV tuned in? I was speaking to my bro in Tauranga this arvo, and he's set up a temp dish on his retaining wall which is bringing the feed in loud and clear.

Hopefully TVNZ are going to stick with it until after STS-114 at the earliest.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Ahhh, crap.

Changes to TVNZ’s Free-To-Air Channels on its Digital Platform

This is a reminder that TVNZ will be making changes TOMORROW to its Free-To-Air test channels that it transmits as part of the experimental digital platform. The changes are necessary as part of the preparation for the new FreeView digital service. This work will be carried out on both TVNZ’s carriers TOMORROW, Tuesday 25th July 2006 beginning at 0200 hours (2am) and should be completed soon after. Present content on 12.456GHz will appear on the frequency 12.483GHz as well as 12.456 GHz. Then, on the 31st of July, the two carriers will reduce to just one, namely 12.483 GHz.

Most Set Top Boxes will have to be re-tuned to 12.483GHz. Some Set Top Boxes, when first turned on after the changes, might detect the alterations and initiate an auto-search, find the new frequencies and reset themselves. Other Set Top Boxes will have to be manually adjusted using the menu to find the tuner and then the desired channels.

The rearrangement means one of the experimental channels, showing NASA activities, will not be restored to the test platform.

The list of test channels after the TOMORROW’s changes will be:
· MTS
· TVONE (Wellington)
· TV2 (Wellington)
· TVONE (Christchurch)
· TV2 (Christchurch)
· Bloomberg
· DWTV
· CCTV9
· TVNZ WIDE

This is the first change to TVNZ’s experimental platform in preparation for FreeView. Subsequent changes will be advised. We remind you, and we ask this be passed on to viewers, that some of these channels, including CCTV9 and DWTV, continue to be part of our digital testing and may not be included in the FreeView bouquet.

Oh well, it was a nice ride while it lasted. I guess I'll have to re-train the 3m on I701 again,

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Perhaps the 3m won't have to be moved afterall. Promising news for those Kiwi's who were getting their fix of NASA on B1 Ku.

(Craig's comment, this is totally expected as part of the progress towards the creation of the "FreeView" platform. Don't worry about the loss of Nasa as arrangements are being made for it to appear elsewhere...)/safety_wrapper>

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Oh ******, it was too good to be true, I guess. I mean, hell -- I'd gladly pay extra to include Nasa TV as part of my Sky package!!! Should we start a petition??

One Percent of Federal Funding For Space: America CAN Afford it!! LEO is a Prison -- It's time for a JAILBREAK!!

matt, it does appear that we haven't seen the last of it on B1 Ku. It's even been suggested to me that the Aussies might get a look at NASA TV finally under the reconfig associated with Optus D1 launch, although I'm not sure if that isn't wishful thinking.

Anyway, if you've been watching the B1 feed on 12.456 GHz, I'm pleased to report that TVNZ have removed the Stargate-SG1 reruns and put NASA back on. I assume it will disappear again as per the above statement from TVNZ but you will at least have it for another week, which will obviously include Atlantis rollout.

They are showing some awesome slo-mo footage of Shuttle launch right now. You actually see the bolts fire prior to SRB ignition, just amazing to watch.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

In reply to:

I'd gladly pay extra to include Nasa TV as part of my Sky package!!! Should we start a petition??

It does seem like it's going to turn up somewhere, be that as part of Sky's package or maybe as an offering from TV3 as part of their Freeview selection.

I'm cautiously optimistic that we will see NASA TV on Ku for a while yet, though it suits me that it is being used as a 'test' feed for the time being. If it is picked up as a Freeview offering, that's going to mean one thing ... adverts. Given the track record of TVNZ and live events, you can just see Geoff Bryan saying that they will be cutting away for an ad break at T-30 seconds during a Shuttle launch.

Yes to the petition. I have an extensive list of Sky channels surplus to my requirements.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

I bring excellent news to all Ku-capable Kiwi's, particularly mattblack, but also anyone else who was enjoying NASA TV on Optus B1.

It would seem that TVNZ have removed the moderately interesting DW-TV from their Freeview test MUX in favour of NASA TV once more. I assume this is due to their requiring footage of the upcoming Shuttle mission for their news bulletins but ... whatever ... their motives are to our gain!

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Still further developments for Kiwi NASA TV viewers. An outfit called Auckland Teleport have begun testing their facility, uplinking to NSS5 on Ku. Don't know what the long-term plans are with them, but potentially a permanent source for the channel here on Ku if you don't have a 3 metre plus C-Band dish.

"NASA TV"

12612 V
SR 5785
Fec 3/4

That makes three birds with NASA TV in NZ currently if you have the correct kit to take advantage of it.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Just a heads-up for the Aussies, the latest I've heard is that Auckland Teleport intends uplinking NASA TV onto the NSS5 Australian spot beam once it gains access to same.

A 90cm Ku dish aimed at that bird should see you in business.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Sorry photon, didn't see your question until tonight. Very occasionally I get rain-fade, but I suspect that has been more as a result of the ill-health of B1 than any inclement weather conditions.

Interestingly, D1's improved performance should make rain-fade a thing of the past on the 65cm dish I am using. Viewers should get a strong signal on only a 30cm dish once the new bird is in orbit.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!
