I watched this movie again on TCM last night and I now seem to recall it had two different endings.

The one last night just showed Roy (Richard Dreyfus)being escorted into the alien craft and the hatch closing.

But I'm sure I've seen it where they show him insde the spaceship as it lifted off.

I can't find any reference online supporting my memory, so does anyone else remember there being at least 2 different endings?
Bob DeWoody

When the movie first came out, everyone screamed for a view inside the ship. Such a view was not filmed or created in the first filming. Spielberg put together a new ending years later. In my view, it ruined the ending.

Vote Libertarian

Wasn't that the ending with him standing at the bottom of the central core of the ship with thousands (?) of aliens looking down on him, and then showering him with angel hair (or whatever it was called)?
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will to strive, to seek, to find and not to yeild. - Tennyson

So the one on TCM last night was the original ending.
Bob DeWoody

Basically, yeah. You see the inside, in which the ceiling is "lifted" off like an elevator, with nothing but "light" pushing it up. The inside of the ship is like a big city.

A really cheesy let down, that certainly did not live up to everyones' individual imaginations.

Vote Libertarian

A different subject, but Close Encounters is definately a cut above E.T. in terms of the Sc-Fi that Spielberg has done. I never really warmed up to that movie, in fact, I don't believe I've ever watched more than 10-15 minutes of E.T.

E.T. was absolute Hollywood fluff. No substance whatsoever.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Hey, you did hear that E.T., a long time ago now, had a heart attack didn't you?

He got the phone bill for "phoning home!!!"

Ancient joke, but was reminded of this with that post.

Got to agree with this. I didn't get to see ET the first time so I wanted to see it really badly. When I saw it, I was disappointed.
