question re the sky last night

last night at 6pm est in bangor maine i observed a large planet-venus. at 11o'clock off the planet i could see a very small light. was i able to see a moon of venus with the naked eye?

Hi rlgjr - <br /><br />Venus has no moons. I checked with Starry Night and possibly what you saw (11 O'Clock of Venus), if you were in dark skies were one of a few magnitude 6 stars in Sagittarius.

I'd say you saw either alpha or beta Capricorni. Both are slightly off to the direction you mentioned at the time and 3rd magnitude so could well have been visible. <br /><br />Mark.
