It is well known by us old-timer space enthusiasts that the whole space shuttle program was unnecessary, ill-conceived, and poorly executed. It was the sole surviving element of Werner Von Braun's original, majestic, three-part space program: A permanently manned, revolving, wheel-shaped space station was to be mankind's "base-camp" in space, and was to be serviced by the space shuttle. The space station was to be a construction and launch site for giant moonships and interplanetary spaceships. A very good portrayal of this concept can be seen in the George Pal movie, "Conquest of Space", which was based on a series of articles in Collier's magazine written by Von Braun and illustrated by Chesley Bonestell. As it turned out, the giant space station was never built (and don't try to point to that collection of tin cans with a handful of people in orbit right now), so the space shuttle could not be built to do one thing. Instead, it was "designed by committee", so that it had to do a bunch of different things semi-well instead of one thing really well. It turned out to be so costly and complicated, it nearly bankrupted the US manned space program. We were finally going to get back on track with the Constellation program, but it appears our baboon-in-chief would rather provide ghetto-dwellers with free malt-liquor instead of going back to the moon and on to Mars. I will go to my grave blaming welfare recipients and their "champions" (like "Reverend" Ralph Abernathy) for keeping America from going back to the moon or on to Mars before the year 2000. Remember, in 1968, we really believed that by 2001 our space program would be as advanced as shown in "2001: A Space Odyssey."
