This is awesome:

http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?cid=4865

Stunning video, taken by STS-115 astronaut Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper during Atlantis' re-entry and landing last month, has been acquired, showing what it is like to ride on board an orbiter during re-entry.
The two hour video shows camcorder footage from before the de-orbit burn, all the way through to post landing checks.

There's a free edited version of the video on a link in that article. Amazing how calm they are riding through the plasma.

http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=4813&start=1

Thanks for those links.

I gotta get me that vid. They have shown re-entries from the cockpit before but not very often. On one mission, you actually got to see from inside the shuttle while high above clouds and approaching the SLF all the way to touchdown.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. You're welcome. Yeah, get on and get the full video. It's about 360 meg, but it means it's top quality, so you can do what some of us have done and burned it to DVD and played it on the plasma. If you're a space geek like me you can get a chair near the screen and BE on board Best movie ever, get your friends round.

Why do we have to pay for a government video? It should be free.

Well, yeah! After all, it was paid for with good ol' taxpayer dollars. Although NASA didn't intend it for wide distribution, it should be treated strictly as public domain once it's out there.

Somebody should just post that bad boy to a nice publicly accessible ftp server somewhere.
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

Don't tell Spaceflightnow that when they charge to watch NASA TV videos

Lampblack, there's a FREE highlight video on the link I posted They aren't charging for the 2 hour video, they just happened to have that on the section which is subscription, which is a lot more than just this video. And its worth mentioning they've been trying to get NASA PAO to release it on NASA.gov.
