Sending out Earth's location with the hope of reaching aliens is a controversial idea. These scientists are doing it anyway.

See the song The Trees, by Rush.

Personally, I am fine with trying to contact other civilizations. However, I am not fine with a small group of scientists making this decision for, what...8 billion people now? What gives them the right to do this?

On the other hand, we have been sending out radio signals that will reach any civilization long before these new signals do, and they would just have to triangulate to discover where we are.

But really, the nerve of such a small group of people thinking they have right to make a decision like this for the entire planet is a little galling.

Given that there exists extraterrestrial, sapient life, the enormous distances between galaxies, and that any extraterrestrials are technologically savvy, such smart LGM's may simply shrug off our invitations. Consider the limerick, a version of which the LGM's likely composed. "We were here, but you were not. Now you are here and we are not".
