I started with RedShift 4.0 for Windows 98 SE, it allows you to see the sky from any point in the solar system, and contains the Hubble's Tycho II star catalog. Then I started using Starry Night, and Celestia's freeware. Now and then I go to SIMBAD, NASA's Nstars, and Roger Wilcox's Stellar-Database.com.
Starry Night is the best program for mapping the night sky, however if you feel the price is too high, you can settle for freeware such as Stellarium. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>
