A while ago I downloaded a Freeware Space Exploration simulator called Noctis IV.

This programme amazed me. Only 1.2MB and the guy has generated a galaxy with thousands of stars and planets. You can explore this galaxy and visiting stars and naming all the planets and moons in a system. There are different types of stars two of which on rare occasion have planets with life. Becuase it is so big, you can send in your files, and the names of your explored systems are included in subsequent versions of the simulator.

While the graphics are quire fundamental, what amazed me about this is the incredible potential for this type of simulator game. With improved graphics, greater variation and a better interface, a very highly addictive exploration simulator could be made.

Question: Do other such programmes exist? If so, which is the most advanced?

Ok i know this is not a simulator but more a Online RPG but Eve Online is good. It rather futuristic with huge battle cruisers and stuff but the grahpics of all the stars, plantet, nebulas and stuff are quite something.
As i said it is not a space exploration simulator, more a space warfare/economy simulator in which you can take on different careers and create companys and then buil your own sapce station and the like.
May not be what you looking for but heres the link: www.eve-online.com
Also does cost cash, but you can get a 15 day free trial. by going www.onrpg.com and selecting their special offer.

Chonner

Your link has morphed into a dental jewelry polishing site since you posted it.

http://www.eveonline.com/

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett

Yes. Thanks for that Chonner. After looking at the site, I no longer have any interest in space exploration simulators, but have lost myself in the fascinating world of dental jewellery polishers!!!

But seriously, thanks for all the links.

I think the world's most addictive game is just begging to be made here. What is amazing about that little Noctis game is that the author has randomly generated an entire galaxy. You can visit, stars and planets. The planets grow in your screen as you approach them and then you put down on the surface on any planet and walk around.

Imagine if you used the same concept, but massively improved graphics and variation. Then built a civilisation type game, where the emphasis was on exploration and settlement building (rather than fighting space wars). Discovery is a driving force for us humans and a game that really taps into this would be hopelessly addictive.

Just have patience.
Noctis V is in development. This will have better graphics and a lot of new features.
Thereby this game will be written in Linoleum, a assembly-language that is created by the same guy who gave us Noctis

Buuks - good news. I hope I have some time on my hands again by the time it is released. If it is as good as it sounds, I'll probably spend some serious time explroing his new galaxy.

Chonner - thanks for that. Your accidental link to the dental jewellery was funny though
