From Spaceflight Now:

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2004
1309 GMT (9:09 a.m. EDT)

The crowds at Mojave are being told to stick around after today's flight for a "major announcement" concerning the X Prize Foundation's future.

I wonder... Moon prize? Mars prize? Another Xprize for higher orbits?

In reply to:

The presenter guy is a bit cheesy - the background music sounds a bit like a church sermon - is that the intention ?

LOL I know, I think they're just trying convey the sense of "grandeur" and "majesty" of the event! IMHO I think it could be appropriate, the publicity and added hype won't hurt private spaceflight interest!

1411 GMT (10:11 a.m. EDT)

TAKEOFF! The White Knight carrier aircraft departs the runway at California's Mojave Airport to ferry SpaceShipOne 46,000 feet above the desert for launch. The craft with Melvill strapped aboard is scheduled to be dropped from White Knight in about one hour.

Yay! One more hour of painful waiting...

A rocket plus a baloon is a ROCKOON???

I just about blew my coffee out my nose! Who's writing this stuff?

For anyone who's seen the mockumentary Best in Show, the X-Prize anouncer reminds me of the goofy anouncer at the dog show.

I thought the same thing, while an odd name it does make sense.

NASA TV has the best coverage I think.

How long until seperation?

Does anybody know what diameter circle the White Knight flies as it spirals upward for an hour? I would google it but my modem connection drops out for real player if I cruise the net too much.

Wow, that Virgin logo is kinda large near the rocket nozzle. It's square in the FOV of the onboard camera.

That's history in the making... and I'm proud!

NASA TV is getting choppy, switching to another one, SPACE.com broadcast seems real smooth. Of course now everyone will be going to this one.

I heard that something went wrong and then the internet dropped out. just as they said "Clearly an unscripted maneuver -- come on Mike." Now it's floating around in suborbit and the announcers don't SOUND upset about anything. I am curious as to what happened.

Thank god! I just read on an xprize blog that the craft tumbled shortly after ignition. I'm so relieved, and thrilled by your news!
