Decided to convert this thread to general modelling stuff... possibly should end up in 'images' forum?

Anyone else feel free to add stuff. HardSF has a lot of overlap with real space stuff so there is lots of oportunity to share stuff for different purposes, discuss meanful texture details etc.

*****
Original discussion about greebles:

Anyone know some internet sites with lots of high detail diagrams/pictures of existing space tech?

'greeble' is a term for all that neat detail on spacecraft that noone really knows what it does. I want to do some hardSF modelling, which means I want to decorate my models with lots of this detail. However it would be nice if the detail made some sort of sense.

Suprisingly, real space tech sometimes has all that fun detail, for example:
http://morandini.canalblog.com/images/Satellite_2008.jpg
What is all that cool detail actually for?

This is the best I was able to do. Not a lot of info on Russian craft as to what the details are. The image called satellite 2008 is actually an image of ISS as it appeared after July 2000 and prior to October 2000.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Thanks Ive added that to the list of images I tab though to get ideas. Those alignment targets are a good example of something I could get very wrong if I pasted over a craft just because they look good.

No problem. I was trying to locate some of the nomenclature for the little things sticking all over the Russian components but couldn't find any really good info on the web.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. This comes from a very good website that Jon Clarke posted on a Venus Landers thread here some time back. It is very interesting reading and the pictures will put you in greeble heaven. The spiral antennas are some of my particular favorites.

http://www.mentallandscape.com/V_Venus.htm

Thats great! Lots of bits there. Also it reminds me I saw full specs of the luna lander etc somewhere on the nasa site.

Another thing I would like to know more about is the actual surface detail. Most obviously would be why are some areas covered in that gold or silver foil etc. I think it is called thermal shielding but why isnt everything covered in it? Then there are all these panel lines that I dont know if they are simply how it was constructed or serve some purpose..

this page has some pdf's under it, eg the one labeled Command and Service Module Documentation.
http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/alsj/frame.html

Here is my progress on modelling the earth. still needs some work on clouds etc. It has a nice haze effect. Hoping to build up my own Hard SF library.
Here is a closer version so you can see there actually is a haze, and it isnt just tiredness.

I can't say that this is why there are lines on spaceccraft panels, but I do know that creases in sheet metal increase the strength in two ways: work hardening of the metal in the bent area as well as the geometry making a panel harder to bend across the crease. For example, fold a piece of paper into a W cross section then try to bend it. Same reason older cars had many body lines or curves, to stiffen the body panels.

Nice work, if 3D, what program are you using to model the Earth?

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life.
