Need to stop calling it "landing". It should be called "surfacing" since most of the time they "surface" on water, not land.

So what do you want to call it when birds land on fence posts or telephone wires? Also, when you drop something outside, does it not reach the "surface" of the ground?

I think "landing" is just fine for the term.

Entry for “landing” in the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language 5th edition...

a. The act or process of coming to land or rest, especially after a voyage or flight.
b. A termination, especially of a voyage or flight

So the usage of landing is technically right... and that’s the best kind of right!
