I am currently listening to a book tape of Vulcan's Soul, Exodus. In it there are several characters I am wondering about, mainly Admiral Chekov, and Captain Saavik, wife of Ambassador Spock.

My question concerns those two for any sharp eyed follower of the ST. When did Chekov become an Adm.? Last I heard of him, he was a Commander still wandering around with Captain Kirk on the Enterprise B.
Even Scotty, I don't think, got past the rank of Captain when he was found by Picard's crew in the Dyson sphere. The book also has Uhura as Adm., but I guess I missed Chekov's promotion.

Second question, Captain Saavik, wife of Spock? I knew Picard mentioned he was at Spock's wedding, but I didn't know that Robin was the girl for him. But my question is, who was the Vulcan double agent Spock discovered in ST 6, the Undiscovered Country; that was, I thought, Saavik. I just started listening to this book, and asked the questions of the one who let me listen to the book tape, but he did not know. I also would like to view the movie again to find the answers, but cannot find the time to do so.

If any would know, my curiousity would be grateful for the answers to these burning questions. Side note, if you haven't taken the time to read or listen to "Spock's World", it would be interesting to do so. In it you can find out how Spock's world evolved from trees that decided to walk so they could find more water, and just never stopped walking.

Thanks for any help any of you can provide.

Depending on the time period when then book takes place - mainy things are possible. The future careers of most of the TOS crew were left open-ended so any rank was eventually possible.

Previously, the identity of Spock's wife had also been left open so the idea of Saavik is not entirely farfetched, especially since other books identify her has being half-romulan. And the Shared Pon Farr in ST3

With Rodenberry's demise and the failure of the Enterprise series, you'll probably see a lot of story arcs being closed now that Gene had left open to allow "possibilities".

No, the Vulcan fem in ST6 was not Saavik - she was a fellow Vulcan who spock sponsored and mentored through the Academy. Her first posting was on the Enterprise-A.

Anything else?

Thanks for that update, I was begining to wonder if any one would ever be able to answer this trivia for me. The tape is interesting as it tells of the Vulcan exodus and of those who became Romulan, and of course the current problem to involve all the principals as well.

I appreciate your taking the time to answer this for me, because I may not have much time for such things anymore, but I thought I had a grip on some of the characters there. And then this may just be a new book and timeline as you said to be explored.

There are many that will tell you words to the effect that books are not "canon". In a Shatner series of books for example, Kirk is alive again, brought back to life by an alliance of the Borg and a splinter group of Romulans...

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

According to Star Trek canon, no ship can travel at Warp 10 or above, except under some very unusual circumstances. So, in the Next Generation, if you remember, they would approach Warp 10 fractionally, e.g., "Warp 9.875, Captain."

Again, according to ST canon, there are two overlapping fields initiated that operate rather like the Alcubierre Drive, which is to say a piece of space moves, and carries the ship along with it. As only space moves and not really the ship, it can exceed the speed of light.

A side note is that the Federation symbol they wear is (the little double arc), among other things, supposed to graphically represent the required energy curve on up to light speed and then beyond to FTL. This isn't really canon, it comes from the book Federation

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

But of course you have not mentioned the final NxGen show where Adm. Riker,(of the future), was able to command warp 15 or so, from his flag ship, the Enteriprise, of course.

Or the episode where that brother and sister were trying to convince Picard that going to warp was destroying the universe, I think it was.

P.S. Barf, in deed!!! From that previous post.

Ok, then what is the longest time a spaceship can stay in warp mode at warp 9.99?(TNG-DS9-VOY)

Wikipedia comes through (as usual) with an on-point article.

And there is another interesting article at Memory Alpha. It includes these interesting factoids:

* By the time of the Galaxy-class starship (i.e., the Enterprise in TNG), warp technology had progressed to the point where speeds of warp 9.6 could be sustained for up to twelve hours, although warp 9.2 was considered the "red line". (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")

* Voyager, incorporating newer technology, had a top sustained cruising speed of 9.975. In my neck of the woods, we call that "hauling ass."

As others have noted, Warp 10 was the theoretical "unobtainable speed" during the TNG and Voyager era. But of course, it was actually met or exceeded in a scattering of episodes.

I don't recall any instances of anyone traveling Warp 20, specifically.
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

Yevaud,

Sidenote:
When I first heard about Towel day, I thot it was fun enough to remember, and added the vogans as partly why it was needed. Also, it was just between our Anniversary and wife's b-day as well. That movie has grown on me since it has been out, and I've found myself watching it on the "Starz" channels lately. After the movie I did decide to read the book, as I had read other of his books much earlier. But when I got to the last page, I did look for and feel I had lost a few pages because of the ending the book as compared to the movie. But then chalked it up to the strangness of all that is included in the whole idea there.

By the way, where did you think of that user handle you use? It's not D.A. related is it?
what I never understood was the whole cloaking deal. Why would the Federation agree to not use the technology, BUT not make their enemies, Klingons, Romulans, agree to the same thing? Never made any sence to me.

That is the subject of a lot of speculation and debate. It looks to me like the cloaking device was traded for the definition and "strict" enforcement of the neutral zone.

It also seems possible to me that the Federation might view a cloaking device as a "first strike", offensive weapon, which might be viewed as incompatible with the "principles of the Federation" - i.e. they are the "good guys"

Wayne

http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Treaty_of_Algeron

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

I recall an NG episode where they went so fast, they passed several galaxies and entered some weird dimention or something they couldn't understand. Some warp scientist was experimenting with the drive, apparently. I think it went tons faster than warp 10 or 20. Some unobtainable speed.

-pyoko the duck

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

No that was some superbeing. This scientist was a goofy self-righteous human from Earth.

-pyoko the duck

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

The scientist in question wasn't what made the Enterprise go that fast. It was the Traveler. Also he never made the Enterprise actually go into warp mode as was explained in the episode. The instruments never read above thier max speed (9.something or other). Don't ask me what exactly he did cause he never really explained it.

Also they never entered another dimension. They had literally traveled to the end of the universe.

I have an answer for everything...you may not like the answer or it may not satisfy your curiosity..but it will still be an answer.
"Imagination is more important then Knowledge" ~Albert Einstien~
Guns dont kill people.
