Well, that sure gave me shivers. The credits have Leonard Nimoy playing some role, & I'd swear that was Michael Keaton at the end, saying "the wait is over," but I'll admit, I'm not really sure. His name is not on the credits.

.

Never roll in the mud with a pig.
That guy at the end, and in the middle pounding a scepter on the ground, was the Romulan pirate Nero, the movies main baddie, and he's played by Eric Bana - AKA Hoot in "Blackhawk Down", Bruce Banner in "The Hulk" and Prince Hector of Troy in "Troy".

Nero served in the Earth-Romulan War (see the classic TOS episode "Balance of Terror", the first episode showing the Romulans) and participated in the destruction of the USS Kelvin, the ship on which Kirks father was serving.

Leonard Nimoy plays "old Spock", his original character, late in his life and long after the death of Kirk in "ST: Generations". "Young Spock" is played by Zachary Quinto, Sylar of "Heroes". Sarek, Spocks father, is played by veteran actor Ben Cross and Amanda Grayson, his mother, is played by Wynona Ryder.

After discovering Nero's plot to destroy Kirk & Co. in their youth by using a "Guardian of Forever" time-gate (from the classic and Hugo Award winning TOS episode "The City on the Edge of Forever) old Spock finds and uses a Guardian to go back and warn "someone" so they can save the future.

It's also an origin story for Kirk, Spock and other characters.

Tidbit: Sulu, who has a significant role in this flick, has a cool weapon - a handle that looks like a light saber until he hits a switch and it rapidly expands into a katana.

The trailer looks a little too much like that of a Summer action flick. ST needs a shot in the arm no doubt, but I hope they haven't turned the franchise upside down on its original themes.

I don't think they've gone upside down. That said the stated goal was to put more action into the series with effects and scenery that do the TOS storyline justice. I think they may have succeeced.

As for it being a "summer action flick" - how could a Star Trek movie not be an action flick?? The best of them; Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country, First Contact & Generations, most certainly were that to their core and Voyage Home was too in its own way.

They used Vasquez Rocks for some scenes on Vulcan.

He was giving Geordi heck for telling the captain the truth about the ships/engines capabilities, saying he should always hold something back so he had room to work "miracles."

Now where on Earth did I park my UFO?

Count me excited. Whenever I see that still of the Enterprise being built, I grumble a bit, though. I know this is FICTION, but why build something that weighs THOUSANDS of metric tons in a gravity well?

Because it's both closer to the material resources and you have sufficient local control over said gravity well?
