I got 8/10, apparently I could slide in beside SG at the console! Missed the STS-1 question about launching after T-0, and the one on when onboard computers take over. Bit disappointed I didn't get the latter one, I was sure it was T-10 seconds.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

In reply to:

Can anyone share the story of the STS-1 countdown?

I've been having a bit of a Google around this morning to see if I can find out what the story was, without success so far.

All I can think of off the top of my head is that maybe they ignited the SSME's a little later than they do now, and they had to wait beyond T-0 for the 'twang' to correct to vertical before they hit SRB ignition? That's a complete guess though. I'll keep searching, as I'm very curious to know now.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Actually, the STS-1 countdown was set up with Auto Sequence Start at 27 seconds, main engine start at -3.8 and SRB ignition at +2.9 seconds. At SRB ignition the clock reverted to zero and started counting up.

This was changed with STS-2 and through today is -31, 6.7 and 0.

http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/presskit/sts1.htm

10/10 for me.

-Ben

I got 9 out of 10. I missed the one about when the Orbiter's computer takes over. (I guessed T-10 seconds, correct answer T-31.)

I liked the humorous answer to when the SSMEs light: "when Clint Eastwood is ready".

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
