Sun spits filaments out from 'canyon of fire' as aurora forecast remains strong

That's amazing.

The statement, however, that the canyon is 20,000 km "deep" is a little misleading. Spaceweather.com actually claims the walls are 20,000 km "high".

The difference is that the canyon would not look as cool as it does in their image since diving 20,000 km into the Sun would yield a very hot surface. The temperature difference of the ~200km deep photosphere is 1390K hotter than the top, so 100x deeper would be even hotter than 100x more.
