I first came across this picture some time ago in an old NASA publication, and was blown away by it, though admittedly the image quality was mediocre. Still, it's the thought that counts, and I have yet to see any other similar photos out of the old lunar program (although I hear SMART-1 took a picture of the Earth eclipsing the Sun, which I haven't seen yet).<br /><br />I scanned the photo and attached it. Sorry for the quality, but it is out of an old book; publication information is included in the picture.

I'm surprised that they pointed the camera anywhere near where the Sun was going to be. Similar mistake wiped out the one and only TV camera on Apollo 12's landing. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

<i>Exploring Space With a Camera (1968)</i> I have that book too! I got it when I was a kid, it was my favorite (non-dinosaur) book at that time - I must've read it 10 times back then. I haven't opened it in 25 years though - but I think I will revisit it today. I just checked, it's still on my astronomy bookshelves. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature" align="center"><em><font color="#0000ff">- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -</font></em> </div><div class="Discussion_UserSignature" align="center"><font color="#0000ff"><em>I really, really, really miss the "first unread post" function.</em></font> </div> </div>

Leo: The only thing that saved the camera was the fact that the Sun was totally hidden. It was quite a gamble, though.<br /><br />Sil: <i>Exploring Space with a Camera</i> is one of the coolest books I've ever come across; if anyone is lucky enough to find it at a used bookstore (like myself), or to check it out from a local library, you should go for it. <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" />

I was just reading my copy of <i>Exploring Space with a Camera</i>. Some photos I had forgotten about really cuaght my interest. I liked the photos and discussion of Lunar Orbiter III photographing Surveyor I as it sat on the emoon's surface (p. 96). I also liked the Mariner IV photo of frost deposits on Martian crater rims (p. 133). And finally the many great closup pictures of lunar rilles from Lunar Orbiter V. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature" align="center"><em><font color="#0000ff">- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -</font></em> </div><div class="Discussion_UserSignature" align="center"><font color="#0000ff"><em>I really, really, really miss the "first unread post" function.</em></font> </div> </div>
