He's been diagnosed with a rare form of early-onset Alzheimer's. In a post on his website (click here and scroll down to "An Embuggerance"), he announced the fact, while retaining his characteristic sense of humor about the whole thing. He feels he has books still in him, and wants to be sure his fans know that this doesn't mean anybody should be worried about the immediate future.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

It's terrible that someone who has so entertained others with creations of his mind should be diagnosed with that very thing which destroys what we most cherish about them.

I will continually hope for his good health.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

This is very, very sad news for my wife Maree and I: in 1992 we and Chairperson Struan Judd brought Terry to Auckland for our national Convention and he's been a friend since. It was early in his career and after all these years, he probably sells more books per head of population in New Zealand than anywhere else.

Although Terry has several years of productivity and relatively good health ahead of him, this announcement has nonetheless taken us by surprise and has gripped us in sorrow. Terry Pratchett's mind is an international treasure -- I'm nearly in tears typing this when I realise that because of this cruel, cruel disease, his wonderful intellect will someday, too soon, be lost to his family and to all the millions of people who love him and his work.

Too anyone who has never read his works, do yourself a favour you'll never regret and become a reader of Terry Pratchett. Not only will you laugh yourself half-senseless, but you'll be moved beyond words and learn SO MUCH about human nature and endeavour, to boot.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/105-5689175-1553213?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=terry+pratchett&x=19&y=16

One Percent of Federal Funding For Space: America CAN Afford it!! LEO is a Prison -- It's time for a JAILBREAK!!
