The striations (lineae) on Europa's surface are significantly darker than the surrounding terrain. Given that the lineae are amongst the youngest surface features and they have been likened to Earth's oceanic ridges, they would seem to be a priority target for investigation.
Has any data been obtained indicating what causes the color difference and chemical composition, over and above the tentative discovery of sulphates and carbonates from Galileo's NIMS instrument?
