The universe....What was there before it was created?

Im very curious to know what exactly was before our universe. No one really explains this. In fact no one really mentions there being something there before our universe. It would be like just a blank piece of paper but even that was something. I know there were atomic particles but if there was nothing how could there even be particles? How could our universe have been created when there was nothing? This is just one of the many confusing thoughts that I have and is jumbled up with everything else I know.

Dude, that question has been asked for millennia and AFAIK, no religion or science has an answer for you.

Sorry about that.

Yes I know, but if this were true and everything just came from the big bang and all that other good stuff we know then wouldnt the fact that there had to be something to start the universe prove all those theories wrong?
I betcha that time did not exist before the universe existed. There is no "before" the big bang.

Or the Big Bang has always been there, but without the bang, just the singularity. We probably will never know unfortunately.

***

So what you are saying is that there was nothing but just empty "space" with nothing inside but eventually just came from no where? I dont think that likely. It just doesnt seem to add up.

"Just an eternally big void of nothing"....

ok, but then, how does a singularity appears ?

If I knew that do you think I'd telll you? No I'd be writing up my Noble Prize winning paper .

The short answer is nobody knows, the long answer is nobody knows but involves some 11 dimensional equations as well.

My theory is that the universe is one big heart.

It expands then it contracts, when it contracts it contracts to a point at which another "big bang" occurs.

It's a cycle - all things are cycles so i could imagine that we are part of one big cycle.

my take at it:

Is it logical to say that if the universe is "all that exist" anything we conceive as beeing there "before" it, is nothingness..... and if we agree that we cannot make something out of nothing, the universe has to have been there forever and has no beggining ?

...and since we know that everything has to have a beggining, the universe has it is right now is an impossibility so we are all in a matrix style dream....

"and since we know that everything has to have a beggining"

Do we know for a fact everthing has to have a beginning? or is it our perception that everything has to have a beginning?

As for the Matrix thing..

I believe there is a theory circulating that we are in a computer simulation.

There is no way of knowing for sure.
The problem with this is that it only pushes the problem further away...... that computer that does the simulation, from where does it come from ?

As for the Matrix thing..

I read somewhere that to model a 10 light year cube of space would take the computational power of all the particles in the universe, sorry can't find the source on that one now.

This discussion reminds me of Deep dish by Ani Difranco

this is only a possibility in a world of possibilities
there are obviously there are many possibilities
ranging from small to large
before long there will be short
before short there was nothing
when there was nothing
there was always the possibility
of something becoming what it is
For all we know we could be in a matrix type world but as usual we will never know. Just like many other things here we will never figure out.

Unless of course, you follow string theory then the Singularity is no more. Our universe would have been created by membranes colliding

How can there be "nothing"? How was there a big bang from "nothing"? There had to be something.

I think its like matter and anti matter - you can't have one without the other.

The more you think about it all - a creator of some sort makes understanding it much easier.

true, but what preceeds the creator. I dont want to get religious but in the bible God is infinate and was always there. which leads back to square one what WAS there?

By the way I dont have any religious affiliation or religion for that matter, my answer was un-biased.

Maybe it was the creators dad?

We are probably just an alien petry dish experiment - they put a bunch of different seeds in the bowl to see what would survive and what would thrive - I wish they would let us in on the experiment.

it's hard to understand, impossible really. I try not to think about it. Just think that we are peons or something and my life is what I have to be thankfull for.

Exactly my point it just doesnt seem to add up that the universe was just.. BOOM, and created just like that. I dont think thats very possible but as for your singularity like the string theory it in a sense is created by nothing if i understand it correctly right?

Someone once said (don't recall who).....

"Perhaps we (humans) exist, simply because the universe is trying to figure out its own purpose"
