aka the son of Superman in "Superman Returns".

1. He obviously has Superman's strength as shown by the flying piano.

2. He also appears not to be affected by Kryptonite as he didn't seem to react when Luthor approached him with it on the yacht.

3. When watching it again with our son the other night he came up with an interesting observation; when Richard White flies the plane over the waterfall and it suddenly rises they cut to Jason who seems to be concentrating very hard and perhaps even straining against his harness.

Flight?

Might make for an interesting subplot as the old man teaches a budding "Superboy" to control his powers.

Does that story actually come from the comics, i.e. did the writers of Superman actually have him knock up Lois and create Superboy? Strange that beings from another galaxy can impregnate our earth women.

(Edit) Sorry if this is a bit negative, but I am still reeling from disappointment from this film. I just can't get around how nonsensical it was a) for Lex Luthor to waltz in and take his power crystals and b) that Superman could possibly have a son by Lois Lane. Hence my question as to the basis of it in the original story.

Yes.

In 2000 a graphic novel was published named "Son of Superman", but in this telling his son by Lois is named Jonathan "Jon" Kent after Sups Earth father.

Cover below.

In reply to:

Synopsis: Its been seventeen years since Superman disappeared. Now, sunspot activity has given Jon Kent, a young man who has no idea that he is related to the Man of Steel, some truly unexpected powers. Jons discovery of a heritage he never imagined takes him on a whirlwind adventure in which he is recruited by a terrorist group called the Supermen and set on a dangerous course to find out what really happened to his father.

Seems to me Singer took several elements from this novel and incorporated them into the existing post Superman II movie timeline.

As for marching in, remember that he had been there before and knew that the control panel worked by inserting crystals into particular locations in the panel. He had done this previously in Superman II to do basic records playback, so do you think he had forgotten how? I don't think so

More likely he memorized the panel and had 5 years to work on decoding its functions enough to get the info he needed from the archives.

As for procreating with an Earth woman; Kryptonians had been on Earth before.

Think about it

Thanks for that. I did want to know the basis for Superboy and that summarises it well.

Concerning Lex and the crystals. Yes Lex had been there before - but would Superman and his Kryptonian guardians be so stupid as to not take any basic precautions to prevent illegal entry - basically any Tom, Dick or Harry could walk in and accidentally start Aramgeddon.

I was also very disappointed by Superman Returns. I felt that Kevin Spacey, while a fine actor, was miscast as Lex Luthor. This might not have been so bad, had the script been better.

I didn't think that Lex Luthor's 'diabolical' plan was worthy of such a heavyweight supervillain. It just seemed like a set-up, to create a visually appealling backdrop for the film's climactic aerial scenes.

There were things I liked about the movie too. I liked the relationship between Lois and her husband (boyfriend? I can't remember), and Superman's complicated feelings for her.

Lex's well known penchant for LAND is all the motivation required for him wanting his own continent

As for Spacey, I thought he was near perfect and the movie very good. RottenTomatos.com gives it a 76%;

Reviews Counted: 241
Fresh: 184
Rotten: 57

Yeah, but that land rising out of the ocean was almost worthless. How is Lex supposed to make a fortune from it, when the resulting geological cataclysm would devastate human civilization?

It just made Lex seem like a mustache-twirling, Snidely Whiplash-esque cardboard cutout. Evil geniuses don't create 'diabolical' master plans that leave them bankrupt, powerless, and hated by the world.

Remember his quote about growing land, technologies and weapons using the crystals and that other surviving nations would have to come to him for them?

He had a lot more in mind than condos; rogue nations, terrorists etc. could have Superman-proof HQ's and Lex would get rich on arms sales, which in the comics was his other specialty through LexCorp.

The continent, now in space, is New Krypton and has precedence. In previous lore Brainiac had shrunk Krypton's capital city, Kandor, with a sizing machine and placed it in a bottle as part of his collection.

Superman retrieves Kandor & keeps it in the Fortress where its experts provide him advice etc. Eventually he gets the machine, expands New Krypton to Earth size using solar system materials and un-shrinks Kandor on its new planet. Having the Kryptonite in its core is not out of line as it was also part of Kryptons geology.

I would guess that Superman: Man of Steele will include both Lex and Brainiac, very likely with elements of the excellent Superman: The Animated Series episode where Brainiac comes to Earth under the pretense of a peaceful exchange of knowledge with Lex Luthor. Superman discovers Brainiac's true intentions and with the help of Luthor, defeats Brainiac.

Brainiac only seems to have been destroyed, but in later episodes it's revealed that Brainiac had uploaded to LexCorp's computers a copy of his programming.
