I was just watching the Time Machine, the orginal, and found out that there is a mile stone coming up in that show. He arrived back at his home on Jan 1, 1900, just before he decided to go back to the future and Weena. Show wise, that is coming up in two days. But he stopped to pick up 3 books to help him form society all over again.

And I was wondering what three books would that be?

What are some of your opinions here?

Remember the year is 1900 that he had to choose from. And let's not be sidetracked by any P.C. choices just because they are in the vogue today!!!

My opinion would be that he would use a book on moral conduct, social organization, and government structure of some kind. So, my choices would be a Holy Bible because that was used by our founding fathers to establish our way of life, a book on how a democratic government functions, and one on how to help establish general life principles, and so on.

Being from the West, my list would obviously be biased in that direction.

I would carry a one-volume history survey text including maps, timelines, etc.

Book two would be a big anthology of poetry, excerpts of great literature, philosophy and religion, and reproductions of the best art and music.

Book three would be a maintenance manual for the time machine.

Would we want to conduct the same misstakes all over again? I would rip of the old testament as a starter...

Brgds / InventorWannabe

crazyeddie,

This will probably one of my last posts for a while but I wanted to respond to your post. I can see your direction in the books you would choose to rebuild society of the times. They would be a practical choice there I think.

I also can accept your ideas about the Bible choice. The reason I included it was more abstract in thought then your practical choices. For any problems people may find with it, there are moral compasses it defines that have helped build several societies of the past.

I really guess the choices would reflect the mind-set and bent of the chooser's mind. Thanks for the different point of view that I did not even think of. Henry

P.S. As for the next (I mean other) poster's thot's about a repair manual for the time machine? I guess that would be important, but ??? Again, each to their own I guess.

Sorry about being so serious and real, but I got to thinking of this while reading and posting to Ed.

In refering to Crazyeddie's ideas of choosing books from a practical nature, or mine of a personal and abstract nature, what books do you think a scientist would choose from his own personal library?

The three main books of the "Red Dwarf" series.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."
