We humans often desire more than what is given to us. I understand that, I feel it myself quite often. But as regards the Huygens images, let's pause and consider what really has been accomplished.

As far as I know, The panoramic images we have from Huygens are the first ever taken in the solar system (besides on Earth). As such, by definition, they are the best ever bird's-eye panoramic shots taken of a distant world. This is not just empty praise based on logic. I really do find them fantastic. Given the challenge of taking them at such a distance and under such extremely difficult conditions they are all the more amazing.

I'm no planetary image historian, so it may be easy for someone to prove me wrong. If there are panoramic images out there, taken at altitude, as if from an airplane, from anywhere other than Earth (or Titan!), I'd like to see them.

Agreed. Bravo.
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will to strive, to seek, to find and not to yeild. - Tennyson

Here, here Centsworth!!! I wholeheartedly agree with you...except for one itsy-bitsy part of your posting...

'If there are panoramic images out there, taken at altitude, as if from an airplane, from anywhere other than Earth (or Titan!), I'd like to see them.'

Now as far as I know, airplanes do not fly anywhere but earth...Now if someone wants to prove me wrong here....

Well said, centsworth!! It takes no effort for the ignorant to post here, too.

One Percent of Federal Funding For Space: America CAN Afford it!! LEO is a Prison -- It's time for a JAILBREAK!!

They are still rubbish pictures. What exactly is so exciting about them? They arn't detailed enough to come up with conclusive answers. Which makes me ask what was the point of it all if all it does is leave you with more questions than when you began?

$400m for that crap. If i had that kind of money i'd have had a rover on titan with full colour video.

Congrats on landing on another world but the pictures are still rubbish.

"Which makes me ask what was the point of it all if all it does is leave you with more questions than when you began?"

It's called science. Please don't post any more grooble, your ignorance (and arrogance) are an embarrassment to this board.

Sorry Braun i have the right to my opinion, i could probably build a better probe out of things lying around my house.

I expect more for my 5 minutes of watching the press conference. I've seen better images in star trek and that only costs $10m an ep.

ho ho ho!

i could probably build a better probe out of things lying around my house.

I'll take you up on that offer! It's got to be able to withstand launch, deep space travel, entry, unknown landing surface, Titan's pressure, Titan's weather, Titan's temperature, power ploblems, communication across deep space distance, terrain problems if rover, radiation, and still be able to deliver science.

I don't have a detailed plan right now, but i do have a coca-cola bottle and a few computer components.

"Now as far as I know, airplanes do not fly anywhere but earth...Now if someone wants to prove me wrong here...."

Airplanes should be able to fly ok on Mars, not that anyone or anything had done it yet. You just need to increase the wing span and stopping could be a little rough.
You mean stopping could be a problem like the old sailors feared going off the edge of the earth?

okay...so far I follow....but like how much bigger would the wing have to be? Also, landing problems?

I tried to do a reality check on this one. The New York Times ~space and the universe forum seems to be more into cosmology than space exploration but a few people posted about the pictures. The extreme tech computer nerd forum had one thread about it; about six posts by one person then a handfull of responses like "yeah, cool". I read the last five pages of the bad astronomy thread. The only place I see disappointment is here. I guess I lead a sheltered life Where do they hang out? WooWoo sites?

I'm still waiting.

Is there a single panarama that has been taken anywhere in the solar system, off Earth, that matches the scope and grandeur of the Titan panoramas?

Check out the thread from gamespy. You'd think that if anybody was going to complain about graphics, these l33t doodz would do it! What have they got? S0laris wrote: "Awsome, it appears Titan is covered with lakes of liquid hydrocarbons after all. Can't wait until they release some more detailed photographs."

I'm going to find out if the fundies are complaining

I don't think they know it happened at ARN. They're into "The Spherical Wave Structure Of Matter" and "Teleological Implications Of Entanglement and Teleportation." No time there for something real LOL. ISCID News Editor posted links to the sights and sounds. No comment in the forums, though.

I'm done with my reality check. The pictures are great. The whole civilized world is not outraged outside the small clique of space nerds.

Not that I know of. MER took 3 images on the way down. The team had discovered how difficult it was to figure out where they were from their efforts with Pathfinder. MER was of course, designed and built AFTER Huygens!

There is tho one very impressive image of the Himalayas taken by the ISS at a very low angle, so it looks like it's from 150,000ft or so. That one is pretty impressive.

But no, there are no panoramic descent images that predate Huygens.

Do you understand that the majority of the budget was spent on accomplishing that primary objective?

The craft WAS NOT designed to be a photographing lander. That was just an added bonus throw in incase the thing survived and actually did touch-down. Why do you think it was expected it to last a mere 2 minutes before going silent? Don't you think if the crafts primary objective was to land & take pictures, then YES it would have been equip with different hardware? A long-lasting enclosure, equipment and power supply?

From a mission standpoint, the pictures, no matter what anyones opinion is of them, is merely icing on the cake.

In the future, try not to be such an herb.
