How about a billion 500 foot balloons, aluminized on the top 50% and black the bottom 20%, free flying at about 100,000 feet? That would be high enough that most of the reflected photons would return to space. That might cool the Earth 1 degrees c = 1.8 degrees f. The hydrogen won't burn at 100,000 feet. Neil

No, the heating is due to radiation hitting the ground so can equally be sent back. Sure some is lost to atmospheric heating just as it is on entering.<br />There's work on putting solar panels on glass so the mirror could be behind this, a double whammy, consuming & reflecting <img src="/images/icons/wink.gif" />

I think that we need to simply eliminate fuel itslef. We need to figure out how to produce abundant energy that has no harmful effects on it's surroundings. Fossil fuels, alternative fuels and so on, all still going to produce some kind of emmision, that to me is unacceptable. I on the other hand am a firm believer in solar power and magnetism. We simply need to produce more efficient solar cells and more efficient batteries that can hold and maintain high charges. Or if you don't trust the sun, why not use the pressure of magnetism in an engine to push the pistons, instead of the combustion of gasoline to push the pistons. Simple as that, but oil companies will always eliminate threats that might stop their profit from fossil fuels. Even if the world dies from it, they will never stop using oil until there is no oil left in the world. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

The prosparity in many countries begining in the first term of President Ronald Ragan, could end anytime and poverty persist for decades. Advertising, TV and movies could change the life style they promote. Islam may soon control half of the world. This isn't my field but you may have a good point .<br />If it takes less energy to kill magnetism at the Curie point than the energy transfered to the piston then it'll work. However it seems magnetism is like gravity & is inconsumable so this is probably going to be perpetual motion.<br />Nikola Tesla manged to design something that used both the action & reaction combined, sheer heresy...

The only thing that can stop population growth is stupidity. People will not want to have kids in a world infested with war, disease, and famine. And all of these things happen when the so-called world leaders focus on other things like letting their own problems get in the way of taking care of the people. <br /><br /> Will the kings ever fight their own battles, instead of sending millions of soldiers and innocent people to certain death? I will die for no idiological belief put forward by some A-hole living in luxury up on a hill. And Friday Night World Leader Fights will never happen. Thank you, crazyeddie. It's amazing how the Malthusian myth of population growth still endures. You articulated the reasons for the likely rate of growth falling to zero before this century ends. That's not to say that the figure at which it stabilises won't be huge, and a huge burden to the world. But the world in the 20th century saw growth of a factor of 5 or 6, and we will never see that again. Even China's population is likely to stabilize at some point, and by around 2035 or earlier India will overtake it to become the most populous country. <br /><br />None of this mitigates the problem of global warming - if the entire world enjoyed the standard of living of the US or western Europe, we'd have a problem. The challenge the world has is somehow to engage with the Chinas and the Indias to rein in their economic growth (which per unit of output is far more polluting than western growth) for the sake of the world, but we all need to set an example. Yet why should they not be entitled to live as we do ?<br /><br />

War, disease and famine produces higher birth rates in humans and some other species. Perhaps we will reverse that trend in the near future. Trickle down ecconomics is still producing prosperity gains for both the poor and middle class in most cases. Why do you think trickle down will soon fail? Neil
