Toutatis Close Approaches (EMD = Earth-Moon distances)

Date 2004 Sep 29
hh:mm 13:37

Dist AU 0.0103592320
km 1,549,719
miles 962,951
EMD 4.0

RA 14 31 33.2
Dec -59 40 29.9
Constell'n Centaurus

It has a mag of 15.3 so you would need a darksite with about a 20" scope. You would also have to be in the southern hemisphere since it going to be in Centaurus

www.siriuslookers.org

Dude,

THE CAPS LOCK KEY IS LOCATED TOWARD THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF YOUR KEYBOARD. TYPICALLY HALF WAY DOWN. YOU MIGHT FIND IT USEFUL.

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett

It will be visiable in the northern hemisphere In October.

From Space.com ...
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/toutatis_flyby_040927.html
"By early October, it will suddenly be re-emerging into northern skies as its apparent trajectory will bring it back into very favorable view," Sherrod said in an e-mail interview. But by then the asteroid will be moving away from Earth and getting dimmer. It will quickly become "very difficult" to spot even with an 8-inch telescope, he said.

5 Oct / RA10 26.52 / Dec -2 38.4 / 0.036AU distant / 15.6 mag

In reply to:

STICK TO THE TOPIC.

If you're going to speak in all caps, saturn44, you're going to have to expect people to ask you to stop. Speaking in all caps is the equivalent of shouting. So you come across as very brash.

At nearest approach, Toutatis will only be visible from Australia and regions nearby. But you can get the ephemerides for it here, which you can plug into a planetarium program to predict viewing locations.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

qzzq- Yes, but it carries a negative connotation. Now what about bold, underlined, larger font!

Saturn - capital idea! It helps those with poor eyesight to view your post- now to view Toutatis!

You all - what is the probability an asteroid similar in size to Toutatis will strike earth - I guess that would need a time factor - like per 1,000 years, etc.

I heard some thought Toutatis might strike us - that view has been proven wrong, I think.
