On Earth, there is the Tropic Of Cancer and Tropic Of Capricorn. What are the tropic names on all the other major solar system bodies?

AFAIK, they don't have such names, but I will check. With no humans watching to name them, it might not be a priority. I'm sure if any of the other SDC crowd knows, they will chime in. Furthest north and south of equator sun can appear directly ovefrhead during the course of a planetary year would be applicable to Neptune, Saturn, Jupiter, (barely) and Mars. Does not seem to be 'conventionally' applicable to Uranus, Mercury, and Venus. Would be applicable on earth's moon, btw . . . <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!So many people, so few recipes !!Let's clean up this stinkhole !! </div>

I found mention of a few. Mars has the Tropic of Aquarius and Tropic Of Leo. Titan has the Tropic Of Taurus and Tropic Of Ophiuchus. Anyone know others? Or, where I can go to find them? Thanks! Rob

That is correct RobAstor. Saturn: Tropic of Taurus & Tropic of Ophiuchus. Uranus: Tropic of Taurus & Tropic of Ophiuchus. Neptune: Tropic of Aquarius & Tropic of Leo. Asteroid 433 Eros: Tropic of Corvus & Tropic of Pisces. Hope this helps. List of other object Polar Stars here too. I take it Mercury, Venus, and many of the other objects don't have named Tropics, correct? I find it fascinating to know what they would be for Pluto, Sedna, Eris, and many of the other distant bodies, if they were determined.

Another fact, the Earth's tropics should be renamed. Tropic of Gemini & Tropic of Sagittarius. Pluto's are the Tropic of Cancer & Tropic of Capricorn, ironically. Regarding Eris, Sedna, Orcus, Quaoar, etc, we do not know their poles of rotation as yet. Mercury, Venus & Jupiter, really do not have any, as they rotate upright. Hi RobAstor. I have Redshift 5 & Celestia. Quite often I place myself on other planets & moons with these & run through their seasons (if they have any), view the sun move through the constellations (Eris & Pluto are interesting in this repect), the Uranus moons as senn from Uranus. Check back here later, I will post here the list of constellations the Uranus moons move in front of as seen from Uranus. It is just I am not at home now, so do not have the software on this computer, its at home. Charon from Pluto also. This is turning into a really interesting thread. Mercury rotates upright. Venus is upside down = about 178 degrees/ for most practical purposes figure 2 degrees tilt. IIRC = if I recall correctly the gas giants are about 10 degrees tilt except Uranus which is about 89 degrees. Perhaps the tilts I remember are with respect to the plane of Earth's orbit, instead of the plane of the planet's etc orbit. I'm quite sure Mercury is 9 degrees tilt with respect to Earth's orbit but zero degrees with respect to the plane of Mercury's orbit. Neil
