OK all you space cadets... here's your chance to earn your wings....

USAF Introduces Space Wings
Aviation Week & Space Technology 10/18/2004, page 25
Edited by James R. Asker

Winging It
U.S. Air Force space personnel will be wearing new wings sometime next year, assuming a proposed space badge receives final approval from the service's uniform board and the Institute of Heraldry. Unveiled by USAF Space Command chief Gen. Lance W. Lord during the Strategic Space 2004 conference, the badge is part of a concerted AFSPC effort to develop a national resource of space professionals. It partially addresses a 2001 Space Commission recommendation that the Defense Dept. better train and develop a unified, professional space cadre. "Just as pilots wear the same badge, whether they fly fighters, bombers, tankers or transports, all very distinct and different missions, our space professionals should wear the same badge to reflect the unity of their mission and capabilities," Lord said. The current USAF space and missile functional badge, as well as the long-lived "pocket rocket" worn by missile operators, will be replaced by the new space badge (see photo). It could be 6-9 months before this badge is sported on USAF uniforms.
