I'm a bit late on this news. Verity Lambert passed away at the age of 71 on November 24. Fittingly, this was the day after Dr Who's 44th anniversary. Verity Lambert will always be much beloved of science fiction afficianados for being the first producer of the longest running science fiction series in history. Although she did not come up with the idea for the show (that credit belongs to Sydney Newman), it was Lambert who made it a success, helming its first few seasons and setting the tone for the many who would follow her.

Here's an obituary: Verity Lambert obituary at The Telegraph

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Here's an even better obituary, from the Independent. It contains this wonderful bit of wisdom from Lambert:

Lambert's technique for getting the best out of writers was simple. "I am not a writer," she explained.

So I try not to tell a writer what I think is wrong. I try to ask what he or she wanted to say in a scene. Then I can say, "Well, maybe you're not saying it," or, "Maybe I am missing it for some reason." The most negative thing you can say to a writer is, "I don't like this scene but I don't know why." If I'm any good at it, it's because I believe the person who has written it has to provide the answer.

This obit also includes a piece by a good friend of Lambert's. It mentions that she loved cooking. I have a copy of the Dr Who Cookbook, and it includes several of her recipes.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
