I found this article on a Very Large Telescope galaxy survey interesting: http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/061218_nature_nurture.html The ESO press release can be found here: http://www.eso.org/outreach/press-rel/pr-2006/pr-45-06.html<br /><br />The information presented regarding galactic formation and evolution seems fairly straightforward: galactic evolution appears to be influenced by both intrinsic and environmental conditions. However, the image presented with the press release is quite astounding: http://www.eso.org/outreach/press-rel/pr-2006/phot-45-06.html<br /><br />A helix type structure is apparent, though there is no comment made in the article or press release on this other than to state in the image description that this is "astonishing". What the heck is going on with this helix structure? The galactic evolution insight is very interesting but It is extremely puzzling to me that this apparent helix structure is not the main focus of the press release, this totally blows me away. Could anyone shed some insight on why this apparent helix structure seems to be taken so lightly, just mentioned in passing as a curiosity? It seems like a possibly monumental finding to me...
