Ok, so, Down in orlando, driving back up from disney world (The tuesday before christmas) I noted that the moon appeared on its side... It didn't appear to be caused by clouds....So, is there any other possible phenmena like moondogs and such....
In the event of a full scale nuclear war or NEO impact event, there are two categories of underground shelters available to the public, distinguished by depth underground: bunkers and graves...

Yes.

You'd fallen over onto your side, and didn't know it.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Ok, that is odd. On the 20th, the moon was at about 10% or less remaining of a waning crescent. Hmmm....

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

You don't think the solstice had anything to do with it?
In the event of a full scale nuclear war or NEO impact event, there are two categories of underground shelters available to the public, distinguished by depth underground: bunkers and graves...

No, I don't believe so. Other than it's astronomical significance, it's only a day no different than any other.

Possibly there was a partial halo effect (ice crystals in the atmosphere), and it appeared to be on it's side? (e.g., the halo appearing to be the moon on it's side) Not certain.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

It was magnified also....That makes atmospheric distortion a possibilty right?
In the event of a full scale nuclear war or NEO impact event, there are two categories of underground shelters available to the public, distinguished by depth underground: bunkers and graves...

You were further south than usual? For those of us who live less that 45 degrees from the equator the moon always appears on its side. It's the way it's supposed to look!

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

Huh.

You know, in all of the years I've been involved in Astronomy, that is literally the first time I'd ever heard that.

I live and learn.

Thanks.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Oddly. that much I knew, and the Equatorial presentation / orientation of the moon near the equator is *implied* but was never stated to me. It's right there in front of me, and I failed to see it.

My bad. Can't know everything.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Take a look at Venus tonight, in binoculars right after sunset (or even without, if you have excellent eyes). Sideways also!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I really, really, really miss the "first unread post" function.
