Hello, everybody!<br /><br />First off, thank you to everybody who volunteered for moderatorship and the many who suggested moderators or offered their support for a variety of choices. The overwhelming offers of support are truly moving. It's wonderful to know how much everybody cares about this community. <img src="/images/icons/wink.gif" /> Thank you, all of you, on behalf of myself, the other old moderators, the administrators, and SPACE.com itself.<br /><br />The administrators have chosen two new moderators from the long list of volunteers. It is with great pleasure that I welcome new moderators <b>najaB and Rhodan</b>! Both of them are long-time members who have always been closely involved with the community, helping newbies to get comfortable, soothing ruffled feathers, and coming up with fascinating information on all sorts of topics. They are going to make excellent moderators! As an added bonus, they're in different time zones than any of the existing mods, so you can look forward to faster image approval!<br /><br />Give them a great big welcome, folks! <img src="/images/icons/wink.gif" /> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p> </p><p><font color="#666699"><em>"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff."</em>  -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"</font></p> </div>

That would have been my question too. Perry Rhodan is a popular Sci Fi author -- so one might postulate that this particular 'Rhodan' hangs out in the Sci-Fi forum fairly exclusively. Especially as <b>this</b> one has never opened that forum... <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" />

So, what qualifies a person to be a Moderator?

Again? Someone? Please explain.

Besides having the desire, the time, and the energy, I would say Calli's post states some good qualifications: "...long-time members who have always been closely involved with the community, helping newbies to get comfortable, soothing ruffled feathers...". I would add that they should be able to draw the line between scientific speculation and fantastic speculation.

IMHO, one thing is the ability to seperate the User from the moderator. The user is just that, a user. , IOW, I can be as opinionated as anyone else. The moderator has specific functions.

Posts by moderators should also be example for other members. Bad spelling, no use of text formatting, no links to source of their posts, and other half cooked posting should be avoided, which is not the case atm.

Moderators also represent site politics on various matters, and they should be aware of that.

I would recommend using another, user level account, for personal opinions.

Say, whatever happened to Rhodan and najab? They were not here when I joined back in May '08.

Yes I was wondering that as well. I was about to welcome them, but they've gone already. Gone before I even joined up here myself apparently.

To answer the question (very belatedly!) as to the whereabouts of najaB and Rhodan, najaB was our extremely knowledgable Mod from the Caribbean. However, he got got married and at around the same time he and has wife moved to the UK so that she could pursue academic interests from memory. I think, given those significant changes in his life, he decided to step down and concentrate on making a new home with his wife in Europe. I believe there are members here who still keep in contact with him away from SDC. He was one of the best Mods this site has seen, IMHO, and I hope he is doing well.

As for Rhodan, you newer folks will probably know him better as User "qzzq". He was one of the Mods who decided to take a separate identity to perform that role here.

Hope that clears the 'mystery' up for you. :)
