What are these lights at night?

I have been going out at all hours of the night, and viewing lights in the sky. Generally they go straight, either North to South or West to East. Sometimes they travel in a "jerky" motion and I have seen a few zigzag. <br /> Some of these are satellites I realize but when I see them at midnight or 1:00 am they can't be satellites because those need the light of the sun to shine. If you have a satellite 200 miles up at midnight you have thousands of miles of Earth in between it and the sun. Conventional aircraft are also easy to tell from these. I am using 8 power binoculars to see them. These are not planets, stars or meteors.

What is your latitude? Satellites at midnight are not out of the question for people who live at high latitudes, especially this time of year.

Weather and GPS satellites do not do that. Neither do spy satellites, the ISS, etc... zigzag.<br /><br />Keep looking. And tape stuff. <img src="/images/icons/cool.gif" />

Back in about 1990, I was living in Glendora, Ca. and saw an amazing ball of light come up from the horizen behind the foothills. It was about 8pm during the summer, I think. Me and about six of my friends saw this while just sitting and talking outside.<br /><br />Well, I immediately went into the house and turned on the TV. About ten minutes later a news report came on saying this ball of light was seen from Santa Barbra all the way to the Mexican boarder. <br /><br />The ball of light was soo bright that the whole town was lit-up. It passed right over our heads and just kept on going. I saw a fire like trail behind it as it was passing, very weired??? <br /><br />Also that year, people were reporting hearing sonic booms, but no one was taken responsability.

Oh also, the ball of light was about grapefruit size from my piont of view. This object did not fuse out, but kept going untill it went down into the oppostie horizen.

My Latitude: 42.8750 N which is less than half of the way to the North Pole.

I have seen them also. I believe, thanks to a fellow member, my latitude is 33.8 or 33.9. I have seen them from 9:00pst on. I've also seen pairs of them, with a gap between them, probably about half the size of my fist. have you found out what they are? thanks for in input!

I live on the west coast pst. I've seen lights/satellites go by at around 9pm, 9:30pm and maybe 11pm on through most of the night. I lived in Southern California and I now live on the southern coast of Oregon.<br /><br />In both states, I've seen these same lights/satellites pass over my head going north and south. <br /><br />I have yet to see one change its course abruptly.When I do I post it for sure. <br /><br />I do see lots of small lights shoot around, but I think it's just lots of small pieces of matter burning on entry. I need a video cam that can capture fast images and then slow them down for wiewing.

I remember once when I was a lot younger, happened to see a almost spent meteor in the late daytime, the sun was still shining, I first though a plane on fire, as it was making a loud rushing sound, then about that time it just exploded with a big bang while I was actually looking at it, probably a couple miles away or more then it was just a lots of sparks and then a small smoke trail after it,
