I know that Hollywood is going with heap of remakes and most of them are bad, but would you like to see something remade?
Battlestar Galactica is example of fine remake, Solaris so-so.
I would like to see Flash Gordon remake with Rock as Flash and remake of The Forbiden Planet.

I know this is a minority view, but I really liked Flash Gordon. Queen soundtrack only gets better as time goes by.

As for remakes, if no one would be harmed by viewing the original (yes, it was that bad) I would like to see a decent remake of Asimov's Nightfall.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

I haven't read or saw that movie. What is it about?

And yes Flash was great, I love that 1930s-40s cartoony feel of Sci-Fi, just like Sky Captain and The World of Tmrw.
Are there any other movies with such style?
Nightfall (the short story) is considered by many to be the best sci-fi short story of all time. It is about a civilization on a planet in a multiple star system that only experiences night once every thousand years. Civilization always collapses from the terror of the dark all the people have and they burn everything for light. All the adults go insane. Some scientists discover what is about to happen and try to prevent a total collapse of their civilization.

Nightfall, the movie, is the worst sci-fi movie ever made. It is not even funny bad like Ed Wood stuff, it is just awful bad.

I think Siskel said it was excrable, and he was being generous.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Oh yes Ive read it . I liked that story. The thing with me is that I had about 10 books of compilations of short Sci-fi stories when I was a boy and I don't remember any titles but I do remember stories.

I have the entire collection of "Flash Gordon" movies from the 1930s on DVD. I love them! It's just great fun, without the pretentiousness of modern Sci-Fi.

People poke fun at the special effects, but at least George Lucas didn't have to start completely from scratch. It was all new in 1936. You can forgive them for allowing the audience to see the strings holding up the rocket models.

I also love the 1980 movie with Sam Jones. It was bold of the moviemakers to say, "Screw Star Wars. We're gonna do it just like the comic strip...colorful, comic-opera outfits and everything."

The soundtrack by Queen just makes it even better.

Nightfall.
I have listened to this book on tape and found it a good one to hear. But I did not know that it was made into a movie at all, even if it did stink. About when was this done? Do you have any other information on it?
But it is still sad when "they" destroy a good work as "they" often do.

My favorite to make, since the first try did not even qualify as a serious try, would be "Sphere" by Crichton. They could even use the same cast, which was excellent, but this time try and make a real movie out of it instead of the hack stuff they did the last time.

Its been stolen from loads and generally done very loosely but I'd love to see a "Day of the Triffids"
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. Doesn't Sphere have very similar concept to Solaris?
Agree, I liked the book, but Sphere the movie wasn't worth watching. They almost did the same to Timeline. Think the best is Andromeda Strain.

Am not that familar with Solaris, but I have heard of the show. The book is about a sphere found aboard a space ship found at the bottom of an ocean bed and the events that surround it. Twenty pages or so into the book a special crew of first contact people are able to access the space ship and find it was a PanAm ship made in 2045 or simular date, and it has been under the ocean for more then 300 years. And it just gets better to the end. It is a page turner to the end. I think it is one of the better modern SF books. I have tried not to give to much away if you have not heard of it, but entice you to it. That was what was done for me.

Flynn: unless my memory is playing tricks with me, there *is* a movie. I seem to remember it was made in the early 1960's?

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Thank you. I distinctly remember him as the "hero," looking at a mostly abandoned city, overrun with those evil plants. In black and white.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

I havn't watched it but the symposis I read seems to differ a fair bit from the book, so I'd like it to be "remade" and follow the book a little closer.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. Maltin's 1998 Movie Guide says Nightfall was made in 1988. Rating: BOMB

review: hopelessly muddled ...cheesy production...

vogon13 sez: watch at your own peril. Ghastly horrid movie, no resemblence to the short story at all. Three thumbs down on your TIVO. Think of all the air that was wasted by the people who made this tripe. available on VHS.

bad movie, bad, bad movie.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

I was looking forward to Arnold remaking Omega Man, Dick's I Am Legend, with mega-firepower, and hopefully with better poignancy.

Maybe if we're lucky he'll act it out in real life with the illegal alien problem. . . .
I posted this in the 'Soylent green' thread:

'How sad to remake old classics. The only reasons for remake I think is if better funding could improve the first version. Movies like SG is a product of it's time. People thought we could run out of food. Wouldn't be the same today.'

I think the same goes for the Omega Man. Great movie that need no remake.

SPOILER BELOW!!!!

Would the hero die in a remake? Hardly.

I think I would have to agree with you on your summation of remaking some classic shows. The reason they were classics is that they have surrived the test of time and space, and still have a place in our hearts. Just like watching many shows on TVland, it just somehow is not the same as when we first viewed it, so to trying to bring the past into the present could possibly be the same. I think I would still like old shows like Forbidden Planet just because it was old and wonderfully made. Sometimes its being dated can also cause the show to stand out in your memory as well.

Well, I'd hate to seem them rape it, murder it and shove it in a greasy box formerly used to haul cow drippings and then bury it under a pile of slightly used organic waste.... but.... a remake of this movie, if done right, could spice up the sci-fi genre and get people thinking again....

Forbidden Planet.

IF they stuck to the principle of the storyline AND added a touch more drama, horror and action to it to beaf it up for modern audiences, I think it could be the next "Alien" blockbuster.

However, knowing Hollywood, they'd turn it into soemthing akin to the "Black Hole" with a cutsey cuddly comic-relief "Robby the friendly fur-covered Robot" or some such garbage....

(P.S. If any Hollywood producers see this and get the idea for a new "Forbidden Planet" movie.. and then turn it into a pile of stinking sci-fi pulp-pap, I will personally track you down and leave a large pile of brown and reeking organic material in the middle of the hood of your car. Feel free to trace the DNA. )

I put on my robe and wizard hat...
