what would happen if the moon cracks

Hi. I was just wondering if anyone knows what would happen if the moon split or cracked open. Would it mean exstinction or could we in some possible way survive such an event ect?

It's not the cracking of the Moon that will cause havoc; but the highly energetic incident which must occur to cause such a crack to develop! The Moon is pretty inert and won't just crack apart while sitting there -- gravity tends to hold it all together in one stable piece.<br /><br />But, for example, if the Moon were to be struck by a very large asteroid, large enough to crack it, the energy and debris produced by such an impact event would obviously devastate the Earth too.<br /><br />
