Why can't Endeavour bring back that gyroscope?

No place to safely store it for reentry?

You can't just throw something of that weight in a closet and shove the door closed

But the Krell forgot one thing John. The Control Moment Gyro require a specific pallet or frame to mount on in the Shuttle bay. If Endeavor doesn't have it installed, there's nothing to bolt down the CMG

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

That makes a lot of sense.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. > Didn't they just take one up? I would assume that the two gyroscopes would both fit the same pallet.

Not sure, been to busy to follow the mission. If they brought a CMG up but can't bring the failed one back, it might be that they don't have some of the connecting hardware? Maybe the pallet is damaged? Also, the CMG might not fit into their down-mass budget - especially with the gouge in the TPS.

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

I'm pretty sure it's because the pallet (with the CMG mount) is being installed to Station, and not remaining in the Payload Bay for the return journey. IIRC, the pallet has some other spare parts on it which they want to store handy, aside from the CMG. The CMG mount might be removable from the pallet, but then you run into the same problem with how to mount the mount in the payload bay.

The December mission is obviously coming up with a pallet which will be staying in the payload bay for the round trip.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

That's right. There was an article about it a week ago at our favorite space place.

http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/070807_sts118_cargo_science.html

Endeavour's payload bay also holds a 7,000-pound (3,175-kilogram) spare parts porch known as the External Stowage Platform-3 (ESP-3) that will be installed robotically to the station's portside truss. It carries four hefty pieces of ISS hardware, including a new control moment gyroscope to replace a broken one within the station's U.S. attitude control system.

ESP-3 is going to be removed from the cargo bay on Tuesday and installed on the station's P3 truss segment. ESP-3 will be the first station element to be installed completely by robotics. They can't carry the CMG back because the rack is staying in space.

AFAIK, it was due to Stowage Pallet issues.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world.
