Just FYI;

I'm currently doing the Worlds of Warcraft Beta. (Fantasy MMORPG) Although, I have paid my dues to the online world, I suppose one more little bit doesn't hurt.

The retail version will be out on Nov. 23 for anyone who is interested. It has a rather "cartoony" look and feel which is not bad at all really. The "Violence" factor isn't too terrible either so those of you who have children that you would allow to play online in such an environment don't have to worry too much about in-game violence. So far, I'd recommend it to others. That's about as much as I can say I think. Gotta read the EULA again to check.

So, November 23 is the release date. Reserve boxes are on the shelf at an estimated $10 or so (No software btw). You get a full-length book in the reserve box for your $10. Not a bad deal considering the cash goes towards your final purchase.

I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Open Beta ends this evening. Retail release is scheduled for Nov 23.

My thoughts:

Class balancing leaves a little to be desired. Class "roles" are not well defined at the moment. Alot of work needs to be done on the "Priest" class. The "Shaman" class is a little overpowered atm. I would be watching for extensive modifications to the Priest Class over the next few months and a couple of "nerfs" to the Shaman class. Warriors will probably get a bonus or two so that they can be on par with their "role" expectations. I'm not sure, but Rogues might get a slight nerf so be on the lookout for it if you play one.

WoW is not comparable to many online RPG's. It is not as complicated nor does it require as much dedication to play as games like EQ. It is designed so that you can easily play for a couple of hours and then log off if you wish. Character death is a complete "non-issue." There is virtually nothing lost in the way of time or effort from dying. In my opinion, that "dumbs down" the game alot. It's very easy to find "morons" running around and dying all over the place causing you no end of grief. Especially in PVP "raids" versus the other side. As people progress in levels, these players will hopefully learn better. However, there is no penalty for death. So, level 60 "idiots" and "Ebayers" will be rampant I believe.

Gaining levels and experience is easy. Most classes can solo effectively and you can breeze through levels at an astounding rate compared to other online games. Learning professions is relatively easy and the entire crafting interface is idiot proof. Learning spells for spellcasters just involves making the appropriate level and buying the spell. At at least from the levels of spells available that I saw. So, that is very easy to do.

WoW is relatively simple to play and doesn't require much "skill" in order to play effectively. I believe that many people may enjoy this "MMORPG-Lite" type f
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

I may have seemed too critical of WoW. I too think it is an excellent game. I just find it.. very.. simple. That concerns me. I am anxious to see how they are going to give depth to the game. I think that will rest with the players, their interactions between factions and the developers pushing the storyline. As it stands, it is a good game. I'm just a little put-off by how "dumbed down" it is compared to other MMORPGs.

But, I still gave it a 7 out of 10 in my post. A perfect 10 would be comparable to a "Next Generation" game. A "Nextgen" is like a killerapp. EverQuest was the "Nextgen" MMORPG of it's day.

So, 7 out of 10 ain't bad.

I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Wow does have good graphics. Certainly better than the outdated and overhauled-to-death EQ engine. But, when EQ came out, it certainly made a big splash graphically too.

I didn't think I was going to like the "cartoony" appearance of the game. It sort of grew on me I suppose. I would still rather have "real" looking characters and graphics though. <shrugs /> But, as it is, their graphics are good enough for me.

I haven't heard much about EQ2's engine and how players feel about it's graphics. From what I have seen, they look pretty good and are comparable to some of the better games out there. I'm not looking to go to EQ2 though. I've bought every expansion, been to just about every zone, fought just about everything in EQ... and paid them more money than I should have already. It's time for a change heh heh. Although, I prolly shouldn't play WoW. It'd be better if I used that time for other pursuits I suppose.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Woah, I know a hardcore EQ fan when I see one.

Your review is pretty misleading of WoW, and it sounded like you only played the first 10 levels and dropped it. Not good enough. First off, leveling isnt that 'fast'. You will gain the first 10 levels in 3 or 4 hours, if you know what your doing. However after the time it takes ramps up differently. To put it in perspective it took me as long to get from level 30 to 40 as it did to get from 1-30. The high and low median to get to level 60 is 30-60 days of play time.

The same can be said about difficulty. Try going into an instance when you're level 40 or above and use the same techniques that you've been using in the beginning and you will get your arse handed to you. Each class has a role to fill, and if you're not careful you'll bring down teh whole group. Granted, its not 'Everquest' evil where if one person dies the whole group loses exp, but it aint a cake-walk.

Lastly, I'd like to mention that you've looked at the issue of class balance the wrong way. Of course all characters are not supposed to be equal with one another, thats not the way Blizzard intended. There is a 'rock-paper' scissors format where one class is stronger then the other, but also has an achilles heal. For example: warrior /> rogue > mage > warrior.

The druid and warrior class could use a bit more tweaking, but they're definitly playable, and pretty good.

Lastly, Battlegrounds will be coming out in probably a month or so, and should give people a large incentive to PvP, not to mention a later patch that will add town sieges and such. WoW is a new game; give it time to mature.

Warriors need help because of their miss rate. It may/may not be worse then other classes, but I do notice that since warriors NEED to hit to generate rage (and therefore do special moves), misses and the like hurt them more then any other class. No hit, no rage, dead warrior.

Warriors should have the best hitting precentage of all the classes in the game, IMO. They are described as 'weapons masters' after all. Missing 4x in a row just isnt cool.

WOW is probably the best game i have seen of its kind....its awesome, despite the server's being too packed and waits that last hours at end. I don't have the game (can't afford to play with college). But I did get a bit of playing in under a friend's account. Got my character up to lvl 14. Battlegrounds will out next...where in my opinion, all classes (if used correctly) will be a deadly force to reckon with.

But we all know of course that Rouge's pwn all! -- of course Horde Rouge...not the weak "Alliance".

I am! If there's a couple of things I have to say its the warrior class is a lot better after a few patches, and the servers seemed to have gotten stable again. Try as I might, I just cant stop being addicted to this game.

My only regret is that I am not able to play on European server. Nothing against my guildies and friends on American servers, but I'd like to play on a Euro server for the same reason I post here. Besides, I was born in Europe, so I still feel some connection.

Here's to hoping Bliz allows us to transfer to different regions.

Oh, and my characters are:
Gongari - level 37 Shaman
Mantaro - level 41 Warrior
Onaka - level 40 Warlock
Zurajani - level 42 Rogue

They're all on the server Ner'zhul so look me up!

Revisiting this thread.

Ok, I've experienced much more of the game now. Level 60 "Forsaken" Priest is my main atm. For the Horde! heh heh

WoW is a little more challenging in the late game. Classes do have specific roles to play which is a bonus. Well, currently some classes get the shorter end of the stick as far as their want/need in "instances"(dungeons). But, I think Blizzard will tweak them enough in the future.

One thing I can say about the game is that there is very little, practical, training for players available to prepare them for tougher instances(dungeons). While early instances can be challenging, some players may have difficulty figuring out "what's going on" and this can sometimes lead them to repeat the same mistakes in higher level instances. The learning curve is not steep, but sometimes it appears some people never learn. Some early instances can take several runs before the player has completed all the quests. This is a good thing. However, the ease with which players can "solo" can get them in the habit of doing things in a group that are detrimental. (No terribly bad experiences with such for me. But, I have noticed how this happens on occasion.)

Managing the behavior of the mobs is fairly simple for experienced mmorpg players but can be tougher for those less experienced. The concepts are similar to many of the older generation games. Mobs (monsters) will either always attack you, never attack you or will attack you if you attack them. All people who gain their aggression get put on the hate list. Those who have gained the most, get wailed on until they are dead or someone else torques the mob off more. etc etc. Simple but it can get complex. Managing the aggro while keeping everyone alive is key.

The higher level instances are similar to some of the long raids and dungeon crawls in <insert two letter
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Yup, I'd have to say I agree with a lot of the things youv'e mentioned. The Honor system should be implemented soon (they just released a patch to allow players to test it out) and I would probably give it a week or two before it kicks in with a new patch.

PvP combat is indeed an interesting dynamic. Take a class like the warrior, for example. It has problems in 1v1 encounters where the class is highly susceptible to being rooted, snared or kited by other players. The warrior will still do ok, but generally the odds are stacked against him. But, if you're in a group facing off against another group, its the exact opposite. The warrior becomes a killing machine. Skills like mortal strike allow you hamper the other side's ability to heal, while intimidating shout sends people around you into a fit of panic while immodilizing the guy in front of you - allowing time to promptly hack them into pieces. Im not even going to go into skills like execute, which basically hands out your opponents death sentence anytime they reach 20% of their remaining hp... good times my friend, good times.

Blizz has always maintained that the game was balanced for group PvP and "rock paper scissors" for 1v1. So far, as you have mentioned, that holds true. I just wish I could resolve latency issues. Was in a large PvP raid last night and could not even cast due to latency/lag problems. :/
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Runescape? Well... heheh, whatever floats your boat.

BTW packet, you shouldnt have to worry about that happening in Battlegrounds because those will be put on seperate servers. It'll be similar to an instance, only on a more massive scale.

Yet, I get lagged in instances now. Well, I hope by the time BG comes live, I'll have fixed my little latency issues. If not, I'll be the "Buffbot" guy, buffing everyone then running around as a mana-less target to pull rogues out of the woodwork.

I put on my robe and wizard hat...

I'm playing DAoC it has less cartoony looking graphics in my opinion. The Realm vs Realm(pvp) is also top notch.

The playerbase is smaller but it's better then being lagged to death where-ever one goes.

Oh and does this look familiar
http://www.leagueofpirates.com/sirvival/queuedance.html
