Suppose that those who contend that the universe is only 6,000 years old were right. How many stars would then be visible to us? That is, how many stars are within 6,000 light years of Earth? And what percentage would that be of the stars that we actually can see?

a large portion of the stars visible to the naked eye, no galaxies, few nebulae. the milky way would be greatly diminished in intensity.

Then agian, they throw out all distance measurement methods. Most, I don't think they argue with parrallax.

Parrallax only holds to ~3,500 light years.

But thats thousands of stars (14,000?) and sets up the HR diagram which leads to....everything else.

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Yeah, they are still counting and number of stars is mind boggling. If we had a 6k year old universe, and every evidence suggests that we don't, the number of visible stars would be much much less.

The Universe is not 6,000 years old

The Biblical Universe, which is the biosphere (our world) has Earth in its "center"... Earth is the center of the Biblical Universe.... The "Heavens" are the other planets on whice God (Yahweh Elohim) created Life + God's Heavenly Kingdom (located at higher altitudes).

Do not take 1 god day = 1000 god years literally... this would simply translate to [any length of time (in God's view) = any length of time (in God's view)]

so 1 day = 1001 , 1002, 1003 etc...

1 something = 1000 something is just simplification

so don't take 6,000 years exactly because 2,000 years ago it was what... Jesus! so what is this now.. if Jesus was the 6th or 7th day, then it "must" be the 8th or 9th day... but that does not make sense.

Think like stage 1, stage 2... rather than day 1, day 2...

Petroleum formed Anaerobically and the Acceleration of the Decay of Carbon-14

I've had this debate with similar people. They have at least three ways to "get around" this difficulty:

1) They say that we have no proof that the speed of light was always the same as it is now. The speed of light has been "decaying" over time, and we are now in a more or less constant portion of the speed of light curve. Thousands of years ago, it was MUCH faster. They like to claim an exponential (e^-t) type of decay. This would mean that very far away objects could still be visible.

2) Like Saiph said, they claim that things aren't as far away as we think they are.

3) Lastly, (and this is the only one that doesn't lead to physical contradictions in my opinion) they can claim that along with the rest of the universe, light was created "in transit" to Earth. A God that can create a universe can surely make it so light from distant objects is also created so that we have a steady stream and don't need to wait for first light to reach us. And that is true! The only problem I can raise with this is "why would God bother to deceive us?"

Scott

"Scientists" of the past used the horizon as a base to determine that the Earth "had" to be flat. These men made the mistake of judging according to their limited knowledge.

It says clearly that God rested for the 7th day which is Saturday thats why its a holy jewish day. If it meant anything else but the real standart days then we there would be no 7 day week (most probably) nor the Saturday as a day off for ancient and modern Israel.
What you are trying to do is get arround the porblem of contradiction of the bible to the evidence of the modern science.

RedWhiteArcher - Actually, Kmarinas86 is on the right track!

In the Bible there is more than one sabbath:

1. The 7 24hour day sabbath which was part of the 10 commandments in Exodus 20.

2. The 7th year sabbath - try looking it up!

3. The 50th year sabbath or Jubilee - also part of the law of Moses.

4. God's sabbath or rest day. See Hebrews chapters 3 & 4.

Kmarinas is correct in that God's concept of time is quite different from ours.

Moses, who wrote Genesis, also recorded God's concept of time at Psalms 90:4 -

(Psalm 90:4) . . .For a thousand years are in your eyes but as yesterday when it is past, And as a watch during the night.

That is two equations, btw. A watch during the night was about 4 hours. Those of my faith have favored a 7,000 year long day for additional reasons, but we are not dogmatic about it.

Either way, Genesis 1:1 is BEFORE the first creative day, which begins in verse 3 with the typical phrase each creative begins with.

Interestingly, the Bible states a good clue as to the number of stars out there, as our Bible dictionary notes:

"Number of Stars. In addressing man, God used the stars to denote a countless number, comparable to the grains of sand on the seashore. (Ge 22:17; 15:5; Ex 32:13; compare Ne 9:23; Na 3:15, 16; Heb 11:12.) Since the stars clearly discernible to the unaided eye number only a few thousand, this comparison was viewed by many in the past as out of balance. Yet today the evidence shows that the number of stars does indeed compare to all the grains of sand in all the earth."

Also, note that the number of sands of the seashore is not constant. While new grains are formed other grains compact into sandstone. Likewise, new stars are formed while other stars compact into black holes.
