Wiki : Expedition 1
Expedition 1, or Expedition One, was the first long-duration stay on the International Space Station (ISS). The three-person crew stayed aboard the station for 136 days, from November 2000 to March 2001. It was the beginning of an uninterrupted human presence on the station which still continues, as of October 2010. Expedition 2, which also had three crew members, immediately followed Expedition 1.

The official start of the expedition occurred when the crew docked to the station on 2 November 2000, aboard the non-re-usable Russian spacecraft Soyuz TM-31, which had launched two days earlier.[3] During their mission, the Expedition 1 crew activated various systems on board the station, unpacked equipment that had been delivered, and hosted three visiting Space Shuttle crews and two unmanned Russian Progress resupply vehicles. The crew was very busy throughout the mission,[4] which was declared a success.

The second decade of a new era in human history -- when not everyone lives on our home planet -- begins Nov. 2, 2010, as the International Space Station crosses the 1.5 billion mile mark of its travels with six residents on board and six visitors en route.

On Oct. 25, the station also set a record for being the longest continuously inhabited spacecraft. On that day, the International Space Station eclipsed the previous record of 3,644 days set by the Russian Mir Space Station. With each new day, NASA and its partners are pushing the envelope of human achievement in space into uncharted territory.

The ISS has established a new record on duration of continuous stay of the person on its board. Before the record belonged to an orbital complex "World - Mir" which 3641 day -- almost was 10 years in an orbit. In the beginning of November of the ISS will celebrate 10-year-old anniversary from the beginning of constant stay of cosmonauts at station. On November, 2nd, 2000 on station by the ship "Soyuz TM-30" there has arrived the first expedition of the ISS-1. Now at station 25th long-term expedition works already.

International Space Station will celebrate one more record in its orbital life on November 2, 2010 – 10 years of human space mission. Soyuz TM-31 docked to the station’s Zvezda module on Nov. 2, 2000. Since then, the crews have been constantly working in the orbital outpost.
ISS-1, with station commander William Shepherd, Soyuz commander Yury Gidzenko and flight engineer Sergey Krikalev flew from Baikonur on Oct. 31, and arrived at the station two days later. Their main task was to prepare the ISS for future crew operations.
Equipping the station, ISS-1 were laying grounds for long-term human missions and wide range of scientific experiments for at least 15 years.
«On the occasion of this jubilee I would like to emphasize the role of Russian space industry in the ISS program. Our Soyuz delivered the first crew to the station, and it remains the most reliable and proven vehicle in the project», Head of the Russian Federal Space Agency Anatoly Perminov states. «Currently, the vehicles built by Russian space companies continue transport support of the ISS, when the station crew comprises 6 members – representatives of Russia, the USA, Canada, Japan and Europe».
4 Soyuzes fly to the ISS annually. Russian party has taken full responsibility for crew transportation in the program.
«To commemorate the 10th jubilee of the ISS human mission, Roscosmos companies launched Soyuz TMA-M with modified systems», Anatoly Nikolaevich notes.
Flight tests of the new-series Soyuz TMA-M began on Oct. 8. The vehicle successfully completed necessary maneuvers, and docked to the station automatically.
«For 10 years, Soyuzes have provided not only crew transportation, but also beaten served as safe haven in the program. Most probably, ISS would have hardly beaten the record of Mir», Roscosmos Head adds.
The crews were permanently flying the in Mir orbital station for 3641 days. The ISS record was set on Oct. 22, at 11:13 MSK.
Since beginning of the ISS human mission, more than 190 people from Russia, the USA, Canada, Italy, France, Japan, South Africa, Belgium, Spain, Holland, Brazil, Germany, Sweden, Malaysia, South Korea visited the station.
“Our today’s objectives are even more complicated than 10 years ago», Perminov states. «Once US shuttles stop flying in 2011, Roscosmos will fully support crew rotation. In addition, recent meeting of the agencies heads decided to prolong station’s orbital life till 2020. ISS is a scientific lab today; it is an orbital facility for validation of the future missions to other planets and space objects».
Russian crews of the ISS carry out research constantly, with about 50 experiments within an expedition. The results are applied in medicine, biotechnology, ecology and other branches.
«The humankind entered new era of human space flights with beginning of the first expedition in the ISS on Nov. 2, 2000. I would like to congratulate our international partners, employees of the Russian space industry on this significant date», Roscosmos Head concluded. «I hope that cooperation of different nations developed in the ISS program will continue for many years, both in this project and in other advanced space exploration iniatives».

Sadly, they are still out there! Let them stick it on the darkside of Pluo! Ten and even twenty years after President Thomas Jefferson bought Louisiana, there was little justification for the expense. Yet look at the result! A great nation!

We don't have enough historical perspective to determine if the ISS "was worth it". The cure for cancer may come from some experiments and research that have/may/will be done aboard! The experience gained from operating in zero-g will be invaluable to the future of human space exploration, and it has been demonstrated that humans in the loop are quite advantageous, even though one needs to provide life support systems to sustain them.

Congratulations and continued success to all who participated in or supported the building and continued operation of the International Space Station!

Ad LEO! AD LUNA! Ad Ares! Ad Astra!

Ten years ago today, humans arrived at the International Space Station – and the orbiting laboratory has not been empty since.

While crew members come and go, NASA and its international partners have been occupying the laboratory in the sky uninterrupted for a decade. The space station itself spent two years without a permanent crew before the first astronaut and cosmonauts arrived on Nov. 2, 2000.

"I think it's kind of incredible," said astronaut Peggy Whitson, chief of NASA's astronaut office at Houston's Johnson Space Center. "It's miraculous to have had people on orbit for 10 years continuously."

The negative voices about the ISS are still here. I know i chose to keep my lip zipped out of respect for EarthlingX's thread.

However, now that i'm here i am forced to take a pot shot. I really like the picture of the three guys with the floating oranges. However they have it wrong, the internationally recognized symbol for the ISS is a floating lemon, not an orange.

Thank you! I'll be here all night!

From the White House :

m.whitehouse.gov : 10 Years of Humans at International Space Station
November 02, 2010 at 03:47 PM EDT

Today marks a global milestone—10 years of human presence aboard the International Space Station (ISS). In addition to the 10-year achievement, last week saw the ISS become the longest continuously inhabited spacecraft by exceeding the Mir space station’s record of 3,644 days. Mir was deorbited in March 2001.

With this milestone under their (asteroid) belts, NASA and its international partners are looking ahead to the next 10 years. Under President Obama’s plan for NASA and the recent passage of the NASA Authorization bill, the ISS—which had been due to be scuttled halfway through the next decade—is now set to serve as an orbiting workspace and gravity-free domicile until at least 2020.

As President Obama said in his visit to Kennedy Space Center back in April:

“[W]e will extend the life of the International Space Station likely by more than five years, while actually using it for its intended purpose: conducting advanced research that can help improve the daily lives of people here on Earth, as well as testing and improving upon our capabilities in space. This includes technologies like more efficient life support systems that will help reduce the cost of future missions. And in order to reach the space station, we will work with a growing array of private companies competing to make getting to space easier and more affordable. ”

So while a decade of human occupation of the ISS was an extraordinary accomplishment in its own right, the next 10 years promise to be even more exciting.

Congratulations to the crew of six currently on orbit and to all the crews and teams on the ground that have contributed to the success of the ISS! The potential that this unique and magnificent laboratory has is just now being unlocked.

http://www.whitehouse.gov : Statement by the President on the 10th Anniversary of Crews Aboard the International Space Station
Today marks an important milestone in the history of human exploration. For the past decade, men and women from 15 nations have lived and worked together in space in the peaceful pursuit of science and exploration. The first crew of the International Space Station took up residence 200 miles above Earth on this date 10 years ago and we have had a sustained human presence in space ever since.

Truly an international endeavor, the space station has brought disparate nations together for a common purpose -- to better our lives on Earth. More than 600 experiments conducted in orbit aboard this amazing laboratory have contributed to important research designed to improve the quality of life for everyone.

Because of the extraordinary value of this orbiting research outpost, earlier this year I proposed extending the life of the space station until at least 2020 so that NASA can pioneer new frontiers in education and international cooperation that will maximize the scientific return of this important foothold in space. Congress overwhelmingly agreed, and I was recently able to sign into law legislation that calls for extending the life of the space station for at least another 10 years.

As we look to the next 10 years, we can only imagine what's in store for our future astronauts, engineers, and scientists. I am committed to ensuring that NASA continues along a sustainable path as an international leader in space exploration and as an inspiration to a new generation of explorers to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

As we look to the future of America's continued leadership in space and think about the steps we will take in the months and years to come to extend humanity’s reach beyond Earth orbit, I would like to say thank you and a job well done to the men and women who have contributed to this historic achievement.

Hands down, one of the most amazing structures built by mankind. The ISS compares to the Pyramids in its audacity, its engineering, and in the expansion of the human mind and spirit over nature.

Congratulations to all the engineers, scientists, and astronauts and cosmonauts that gave it their all to build something that all mankind can be proud of.

We will have to wait for others to make decisions about the worth of this structure after some time has passed, but let no body deny the reach and capability of the United States and its partners in building the biggest structure in space.

Ad Astra...

Published 02 November, 2010, 06:51

The International Space Station celebrates its 10th birthday – a decade of constant service. It is the longest period of continuous human habitation outside the atmosphere of the Earth.

The first permanent crew reached the International Space Station on November 2, 2000. It is arguably humanity's most ambitious engineering project to date, a mixture of science, technology and political cooperation between former sworn enemies.

In the 10 years since, the ISS has expanded to the size of a football field, and received 200 visitors. Now the station is nearly complete, but the jury on what it has achieved is still out.

“The ISS is a breakthrough of cooperation,” said Yury Gidzenko from ISS Expedition 1. “Before, there were separate space agencies. Now they work together. It is a leap forward.”

SDC : Life on a Space Station: Q&A With NASA's Chief Astronaut Peggy Whitson

This month, the International Space Station hit the 10-year mark as an inhabited outpost in space. One person — NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson — has personally contributed quite a chunk of that total time, having logged more than a year in space over the course of two long-duration stints on the station.

NASA and 15 other countries began building the International Space Station in 1998 with module launches and construction, but it wasn't until Nov. 2, 2000, when the first crew — one American and two Russians — boarded the orbiting lab. Since then, the station has swelled in size and population. Today, the station's structure is as large as a football field, has enough living space as the inside of a Boeing 747 jumbo jet and supports rotating crews of six people.

SPACE.com caught up with Whitson, who commanded the station's Expedition 16 crew and is currently the chief of the astronaut office at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, to discuss the International Space Station's recent milestone and the future of human spaceflight:

Why not a cple of canadians, japanese and europians?

So what your saying is that we and the russians have to have someone there to make sure no one messes with our stuff? Thought this was the International Space Station. Arent our "partners" trained well enough to not screw something up?

New rules for the space station.. any Japanese are restricted to the Kibo Module.. All canadians will be strapped to the canadarm for the duration of their mission.. European members will be restricted to the leonardo plm if we ever get it up there... signed charlie bolden

Well after a bit of searching I've found that legaly the US owns the largest share of crew time on the ISS.. Tho we share this time and space with JAXA, ESA, and the CSA..The Russians on the other hand arent required to share anything which allows them to sell seats on the soyuz to millionaire tourists and the US gov. since we cant get there any other way. Go SpaceX we need a man rated dragon now.....
