CMEs are explosive outbursts of plasma and charged particles capable of carrying billions of tons of material from the sun at speeds of hundreds of miles (or kilometers) per hour.

I think you meant, "hundreds of miles (or kilometers) per second.

CMEs typically reach the Earth in about a day. At hundreds of miles an hour, it would take about ten years for the CME to hit the Earth.
