I'm looking to buy my first scope. I'd like my kids to enjoy viewing with me. I wish to view both planets and DSOs. I'm trying to make up my mind between 2 scopes offered to me (both used): the Meade LXD75 SN-6 Schmidt-Newtonian which has a very wide FOV and a go-to system; and the Celestron Celestar 8 Deluxe Schmidt-Cassegrain which is a bigger aperture. Any recommendations anyone?

This belongs in Ask the Astoronomer, where there are many threads addressing these type of questions.

Since I'm not a scope expert, I'll let others answer, but if this thread disappears from this forum, look in Ask the Astronomer for it

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I wouldn't reccomend either of those scopes. What I would reccomend is an Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic:

www.oriontelescopes.com

Thank you both. I'll go with the astronomer. As for the Oroin XT 8 - I prefer something more portable and with eq mount.

Do you have experience using a telescope? Ifyou do get the 8", if not get the smaller one.

.

Never roll in the mud with a pig. Thanks Boris,
I do have some experience. I tend to go with the smaller Meade because of the fast focal ratio and the wide FOV (I want my kids to enjoy it too). I'm wondering whether the viewing qulity for planets and DSOs would be noticebly worse comparing to the Celestron SCT.

Either one is very good for Solar System objects, the 8" will of course be better for DSO's. If I were making the choice, I'd go for the one that has the better digital camera capability.

.

Never roll in the mud with a pig. Both are quite good for photography. Ofcours the Celestron has the Fastar with PEC. I'll probably go with the better price.
Thanks.
