High Flight
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

I don't understand your strong negative reaction. "High Flight" is a famous aerospace related poem, pinned by a pilot in training ffor WW2 who later lost his life. It may be somewhat off topic, but not badly so.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

I thought that some of the metaphysical imagery was really particularly effective.

Interesting rhythmic devices too, which seemed to counterpoint the surrealism of the underlying metaphor of the humanity of the poet's compassionate soul.

You could have simply stated something like:

"That seems off-topic for this section, did you really mean to post it here in Missions and Launches?"

I remember when I was young twerp, one of the local TV stations in Huntsville, when it was going off the air, had a short segment in which an F-104 was shown flying, and that poem was read in the background. To a young man, it was - awesome, inspiring, touching - just great. Then, immediately after, the national anthem.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

"I remember that signoff!"

Thank you. Its funny, I think based just on that signoff, I have always thought that plane was one of the most beautiful planes I ever saw.

And the guys voice, it was so...perfect for the words.

I guess this is what they talk about, when we age, things from the distant past become so clear.

I have been a plain, I mean a plane man ever since. I still stop and watch the F15's, F16's, A10's, and the odd F4, F18 or Mig29 fly over when I am walking to or from my car. Even on the crosswalk into building 13.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

We used to see interesting fighters here, way back in the day before we got our butts kicked out of ANZUS. Now it is the occasional flight overhead of a mothballed Skyhawk, or an antique fighter or three at an airshow.

vogon, I can totally relate to the train thing. At risk of red-lining my 'nerd' quotient, I am a collector and occasional operator of model trains.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

I have collections of Hornby (OO) and Graham Farrish (N). The Hornby dates back to my childhood, and the Farrish is a relatively recent development due to decreasing available space!

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Thedream sorry if i offended you but i think it does belong here. It was meant to be a tribute to X15, Apollo 1, STS 51L, STS 107 and other people who dies in the name of space exploration. I saw astronaut diaries for the first time yesterday. I feel very emotional and it has had an affect on me. But again sorry if i offended you. Not intended
