An 8 inch or larger Dobsonian (~ $500) or a 5 or 6 inch GoTo scope (~$1000)

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Even with a really good 5-6" scope, you'd better have dark skies and a handful of expensive filters (hydrogen a, hydrogen b, oxygen III, at the least, each about a hundredish dollars) Also plan on good eyepieces.

My NexStar 5 (very good optics) under less than ideal skies (euphemism) can show me the Orion Nebula in grays with a hint of blues. The snowball with a hint of blue. But most other nebula are well out of its reach.

The 10" is another story...

If nebula observing is your prime goal, I second the Dobsonian. My choice, under decent skies, would be the Orion XT12 ($999 without computer, $1119 with). The 10" is a good pricepoint though, the XT10 is $669 without computer, $789 with. If you get the Intelliscope line, you can always upgrade with the computer add-on later.

If your skies are good, it's all about aperture (and decent eyepieces).

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

The darker the better. If you are out in the country away from any light pollution you should have a beautiful view with an 8 inch with good quality optics for sure.

Welcome to SDC, Sly!

It's never enough...

My 10" out in very dark sky is ok, especially with filters.

The 16" starts to show what one might be looking for, even without filters.

If you want the horsehead or the california, the 10" really doesn't get you there no matter how dark the skies are.

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

Well I was thinking bare minimum and wasn't thinking straight today. But one should never compromise size if possible. A 10 inch would certainly be better. And 12 would be superior. I know I will look into a quality 12 inch when I get serious and buy a telescope myself. So go 10 inch if your budget is not permitting for a 12 inch. Plus make sure you buy a good name brand telescope with guaranteed quality. You don't want to buy an offbrand no matter it's size because bad optics will ruin your night to say the least. That happened to me on my first buy from ebay where I got this mysterious telescope which didn't even seem to be made by any company at all. I think it was a pirate and it's optics gave me fuzzy images.

Certainly agreed. That's why I always recommend Orion for "light buckets". Absolute best bang-for-buck going, imho. http://www.telescope.com

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!
