Hurricane 4911 has some great pix of the shuttles, facilities, and accessories in Freespace.
Worth checking out IMHO.

MW

But the Krell forgot one thing John. When I was a kid back in the 1960s I was on every NASA mailing list from Huntsville to Houston.

From a civilians viewpoint, Saturday was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Shuttle_Guy
Thanks again, I know my family had a great time. I just wish I could have been there, but I couldn't get out of my training. At least I'll be home for the launch in 2 weeks.

I heard about KSC open house form someone who worked there. It was years ago and I wondered if they were still doing it after 911. The person I knew worked in the ISS facility where they have an inside walkthrough on the third or fourth floor that allows tourists to look in on ISS processing but after 911, they shut that down.

Good to see they still have open house, not that I could take advantage of it but its an unusual and nice perk for KSC workers in an age where workers benefits are eroding.

Oh yeh, Hurricane4911s pix are definetely worth looking at.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. I was indeed fortunate to receive an invitation and attend.

Yes this was the first once since 9/11, and it is very important that we continue to hold this and other open houses. Security was in "plain sight" and I felt a sense of pride walking among the hardware and asking an un-countable number of questions.

My favorite response...When I held up a piece of soft 1/2-round piece thermal insulation that surrounds an thruster , they politely said...

"Please do no touch the flight hardware"

We do good work.
My hats off to you and its nice to know we haven't gone overboard and completely eliminated the open house tradition. As long as there is security on hand, these events can and should be held.

Having the public be able to access NASA is one of those benefits we enjoy as a free people even when we don't feel so free.

Are you a NASA or KSC contractor employee?

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Neither.

I live on the gulf coast (Tampa Bay), and work in the Information Technogy area for a non-federal government agency. While growing up in the 1960s I saw first-hand what we as Americans can do if put in enough time and resources.

I have a friend who works for United Space Alliance who invited me to KSC for the open house. I was like the proverbial kid in a candy store.

So much to learn, so little time.
