Replying to:

I too have been waiting for something from SCIFI that peeked my interest. The previews for Sanctuary did just that, it made a good-enough sell. I’ll keep everything fairly generic and try not to make anything a real spoiler. (Sorry, didn't remember any character's names yet&hellip

The first show introduced us to some major characters: good enough. I had some difficulty in figuring out who/what the major antagonist was going to be. Couldn’t accept that its going to just be society’s general fear of anything strange. Just collecting where people/animals wasn't going to cut it...The second episode gave us the ‘Kapol’ (sp?) group as a the antagonist. So, the show will essentially be:- Amanda Tapping, an immortal woman (doesn’t get sick anyway, haven’t seen any speed healing yet)- her daughter from a time/space shifter/super strength/reflexes guy (who I think is already dead) with a bad attitude, Ok reflexes, and smallish yabbas.- A Daniel Jackson look alike with the similar perfect logical mind. Only this guy has some neat fuzzy glowing view of how things work together.- A Neanderthal, I think, who somehow just figured out how to talk and is happy to be butler/personal guard and enjoys serving tea.- All working from a castle equivalent of the bat cave. (Say, just how do they keep this whole castle clean with a staff of … what, 4 people???)...who will be against an all controlling greedy, government infiltrating secret society with mucho weapons and a genetically engineered army (that wear some god-awful monster headpiece/helmet thingy…WTF is that all about?) who remind me of Sleestaks for some reason. One side captures to understand, develop and socially redeem the mutations while the other greedily tries to control and use them for their own self interests. To me it looks like a combination of Heroes/X-files/Stargate: The genetic mutations that (apparently more prevalent then we think) need to work together – like Heroes, and; It’s just the two (or few) of us against the big bad establishment like X-files, and; the never guessing wrong/perfect logic Dr. Daniel from Stargate.Things I like. Well, Amanda Tapping in general, duh. However, they went a little to far to ‘make her different’. A tight sweater, always a good thing, but a generally frumpy long skirt a slow walk/canter. I can accept the long brunette look versus the short blond but that’s a little drastic. We still know its her. However, the forced accent is REALLY trying, could have really done without that ‘difference’. Again not a show stopper but all together something that made my eyes roll. (Also, can she actually get a role where she actually smiles?)My biggest worry: Though I personally like the relaxed, good-girl, logical, surgeon, doctor, immortal, with a generally passive, socially accepting, liberal feel that the new character brings – phewww… - I really think the show would have been better off ratings-wise with a lead with a more kick-ass in your face attitude. Kinda like Alias. They’re trying to do this with the daughter but its just not the same – she’s too cutesie. I would have rather seen it the other way around. Maybe she’ll develop that way now she’s found out about ‘the other genetic mutation collector’. On the whole I actually like it. Its similar enough but different enough to keep me interested…for now. I’m going to give it a few more episodes before I make the final call. So far, a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10.(Edited for formating. That was the ugliest cut/paste I've seen in a while...)
Posted by neomaine

Great synopsis!

I'm a big fan of Amanda Tapping, so I hope this show is a success for her sake (but she'll always be Samantha Carter to me!). Her accent may not be entirely "forced"....she was born in England, you know, and lived there until she was three, before she moved to Canada. You're right about the Will Zimmerman character being a Daniel Jackson clone (did they have to give him glasses that he obviously doesn't need?). Ashley, the daughter, seems to have been burdened with all the security tasks that require martial arts, but I couldn't help but wonder why even a devoted daughter would want to be stuck with such a crappy job, and why her own mother would want to put her in harm's way (unless she is somehow immortal, too).

Anyway, we'll see how it goes. Monsters don't interest me as much as space stuff, so this may be a hard sell.
